What is a Sway Bar and what does it do?

Sway bars are also called anti-sway bars, stabilizer bars and sometimes even anti-roll bars. People call them different things, but they all serve the same purpose, and that is to prevent body roll when turning.
The sway bar is a thick metal bar that links the left side of the vehicle to the right side of the vehicle. It forces both sides of the vehicle to lift and lower evenly, so if one side of the vehicle goes up, the other side has to do the same.  When going around a corner at speed, your vehicle wants to lean over and lose stability.  Luckily, your stabilizer bar is there to save the day and prevent the vehicle from leaning too far and getting out of control.

How do I know if my Sway Bar is not working?

Your sway bar is connected to sway bar end links, which are also known as stabilizer end links.  If the sway bar itself gets damaged or separated from these end links, you will quickly lose all the benefits of the sway bar.  Your vehicle will begin to lean far more than average, and feel more like a boat than a car.  This may be accompanied by rattles and "clunks" over bumps in the road, and you may even get a "crunch" noise if things line up just right.

Can I replace a Sway Bar myself?
Sway bars can be tricky to replace because they often weave in and out of suspension components.  On the 1-10 "difficulty of installation" scale, we would rate most sway bars right around a 5.  On pavement with the car on jack stands, it's tricky but doable, as many of the 1AAuto Team of Experts have replaced and upgraded these within the comforts of our own driveways.
