Idle Air Control Valve |
Idle Air Control Valve Features: Brand New, not remanufactured or rebuilt Direct replacement Built to strict quality control standards 100% tested prior to leaving the factory What is a Idle Air Control Valve? Idle Air Control Valves are a very interesting part of your engine. They are also called Idle Speed Control Valves, Idle Air Control Motors, and Idle Speed Control Motors (IAC & ISC for short). They allow small amounts of air into your engine to adjust the idle speed depending on certain operating conditions. Let's say you hypothetically come to a stop light and stomp on your brakes. Your engine quickly comes down to idle rpm, and then wants to go even further because your brake booster just stole away all its engine vacuum. The ECU sees this potential problem, and tells the ISC to increase the idle a bit to compensate and keep your engine at a happy rpm. The magic of electricity then happens and your vehicle stays running. How do I know if my Idle Air Control Valve is broken? One of the more common signs of a slow or dying Idle Speed Control Valve is an engine that surges, won't stay running when cold, or stalls at stop signs. Idle surge can not only be annoying and make people think you want to race, but it can also damage the capacitors in ECU's (Engine Control Unit). Fixing or replacing an ECU/PCM us always a much greater expense than the IAC itself, so replacing it at the first signs of damage is always a good plan. Most ISC's / IAC's have a test procedure that involves measureing voltage resistances (Ohms) through certain pins. This procedure can be found in most service manuals. Can I replace a Idle Air Control Valve myself? Replacing an Idle Control Valve is usually quite easy. However, sometime you do have to remove surrounding components to get at it. The ISC is often held in with phillips head screws or small hex head bolts. Take extra caution to not strip out the screws, because they aren't the easiest to remove once stripped.
