What is a Driveshaft?
 A driveshaft is used to transfer the power from the engine's rotation out to the axles and eventually the wheels.  The driveshaft itself looks like a 4 inch thick piece of pipe on most rear wheel drive cars and trucks.  On each end of the driveshaft, you will find a U-Joint, which allows for non-binding, up and down movement of the driveshaft as it spins. 
On some extra long vehicles, carrier bearings can be found.  A carrier bearings is located in the middle of a two-piece driveshaft.  It allows the vehicles to have a shorter driveshaft in the front half of the car and a short one in the back.  The only downfall to two-piece driveshafts is the fact that there are twice as many universal joints to wear out!

Can I replace Driveshaft related parts myself?
Most of the time, yes.  Occasionally a U-Joint job can be a real bear to handle, and is best left to a shop, but replacing a carrier bearing, a coupler or an entire driveshaft is usually quite straightforward.  Just be sure to set your parking brake and mark the driveshaft so that it always gets put back in the same way that it came out.
