What is a
Clutch Master Cylinder?
The Clutch Master Cylinder is attached to the clutch pedal and is really the brains of the clutch operation. As you push down the clutch pedal, the hydraulic clutch fluid is sent out of the clutch master cylinder, through the clutch lines, and into the slave cylinder. The slave cylinder then disengages the clutch.  Then, when the pedal is released, the pressure plate pushes back against the clutch fork, which retracts the slave cylinder and pushes the fluid back through the lines and into the master cylinder reservoir.  The clutch master cylinder reservoir has a reserve of fluid for when the clutch begins to wear and the fluid level drops slightly.

How do I know if my
Clutch Master Cylinder is not working?
Many people have a tough time diagnosing clutch problems because they do not fully understand them.  When your clutch stops following your instructions, it's best to take it one step at a time and look for the obvious solutions.  Is it slipping? Chattering? Not disengaging? Each problem has its own kind of diagnosis.  If it is not disengaging, a good start is to check for leaks at the slave cylinder, the lines, and at the back of the clutch master cylinder.  Most of us are not lucky enough to find easy solutions like that, so you need to dig deeper. Try pushing the pedal down while watching the slave cylinder.  If the slave cylinder doesn't move, you either have air in the system, or may have an internally damaged clutch master cylinder.

Can I replace a
Clutch Master Cylinder myself?
These can definitely be replaced by the average DIY'er, though a helper is recommended for clutch bleeding and celebrating purposes when the job is done.  Be sure to use the correct fluid for your vehicle, it is usually listed in the owners manual and stamped into the clutch master cylinder's cap.  Also keep in mind that this fluid is corrosive, which means if spilled, it will destroy your paint, and even some rubber parts.
