Blower Motor Resistor |
1AAuto Blower Motor Resistor Features: Brand New, not remanufactured or rebuilt Direct replacement Built to strict quality control standards 100% tested prior to leaving the factory What is a Blower Motor Resistor? A blower motor resistor is the located between the fan speed control knob on your dashboard and the blower motor itself. It allows your heater & A/C blower fan to spin at variable speeds by controlling the voltage that the blower motor receives. Doing this arduous task causes the resistor to heat up and cool down frequently, which eventually leads it to its untimely failure. How do I know if my Blower Motor Resistor is broken? The most common condition that happens when a blower motor resistor fails is that you lose all of the low speed settings on the fan, and it only works on "high". This makes perfect sense, and here is why: The blower resistor takes the 12 volts that it receives and steps it down to different increments to slow down the blower motor speed. The lower the fan speed, the more voltage the resistor is actually resisting. For example, the low speed setting may allow 4 volts through, medium may allow 8 volts through and the high setting allows the full 12 volts to the blower motor. In a perfect working heating or air conditioning system the "high" speed setting bypasses the resistor completely and the blower motor receives the full 12V from the fan speed switch. So even when the blower motor resistor fails, the 'high" speed setting isn't effected. This is why you lose the low speeds when the resistor fails, but not the high speed. Can I replace a Blower Motor Resistor myself? That depends on your automotive skill and the tools you have available. Many of these heater motor resistors are easy to access because they are mounted under the dashboard, next to the blower motor itself. However, on some vehicles, you will have to remove portions of the dashboard itself and squeeze your hands into places that they do not easily fit in. Most service manuals will give you the tricks to remove these fan resistors in the easiest possible way. |
