Axles > Choose Vehicle Make

Axle shafts are a very important part of your rear axle assembly. They transfer power from the center differential to the drive wheels and often experience tremendous torque due to heavy loads or quick acceleration. After years of heavy torque stress, the rear end assembly may fail in any of a number of ways including the axle itself. Some of the ways in which the axle shaft may fail could include:
- Physically breaking into two pieces
- Splined end of the axle shaft marred from the spider gears
- Grooved bearing surface from premature axle bearing failure which could be caused by:
- Metal particles in the differential fluid
- Low fluid level
- Always compare the original to the replacement axle
- Check these critical dimensions:
- Overall length of axle shaft
- Number & type of splines
- Bolt hole & stud pattern
- Bearing surface diameter
- Inspect the original shaft in the bearing area
- Replace the bearing if the original shows signs of excessive wear, flaking
- Follow all installation instructions in the shop manual
- Replace any worn components such as:
- Retaining clips
- Axle shaft seals
- Dust seals
- Axle bearing
- If any metal particles are present in the differential housing, the housing MUST be flushed thoroughly before the replacement axle is installed. Failure to do so will result in premature failure of the bearing and replacement axle.
