What is an Intake Temperature Sensor?
These sensors are often called two different names. The first name for it is an Intake Air Temp Sensor (IAT), and the second is a Manifold Air Temperature Sensor (MAT).  In our area of the country, IAT seems more common, so we'll run with that name for now.  The purpose of this Intake Temp Sensor is to measure the temperature of the air entering your engine.  Along with information from other sensors, the engine computer (ECU/PCM/ECM) decides how much fuel your engine needs. Typically, the colder the air, the more fuel your engine receives from the computer.

How do I know if my Intake Temperature Sensor is broken?
In most cases when an Air Temperature Sensor goes bad, it will set a check engine light (Often code P0109, P0111, P0112, P0113, or P0114).  When this happens, your engine may begin to run rougher, lose valuable mpg, and feel less powerful.  With a scan tool, you should be able to watch the temperature rise as the engine warms up. If the temperature is stuck at a negative temperature or pegged at the max temperature, then it is likely time for a new sensor.

Can I replace a
Intake Temperature Sensor myself?
Usually these sensors can be replaced by the average enthusiast.  On the difficulty scale of 1-10, we would probably put it around a 2 or 3.  Be sure to check the wiring when testing the sensor, because sometimes it is the real source of the problem.
