Production of the Grand Prix began in 1962 as a full size coupe based on the Pontiac Catalina body with just a slightly reduced trim. Throughout the 60's the Grand Prix remained relatively unaltered, sporting its concave rear window and minimal exterior trim. Each new release increased the size and weight of the Grand Prix a bit more, making it more of a luxury oriented vehicle, but its sales slowly declined in favor of smaller automobiles. All that changed in 1969 when John De Lorean, then head of engineering at Pontiac redeveloped the Grand Prix and Pontiac GTO focusing on style and performance. The switch was made from the Catalina platform to a smaller lighter A-platform, improving the handling and making the Pontiac Grand Prix a hit with consumers. This modification was the beginning of the trend of reducing the size of an automobile in order to improve its performance. 1973 brought the redesigned third generation of the Grand Prix to the public, this time the car size increased due to federal regulations for crash bumpers. This period would be the end of performance based Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles as federal emissions regulations and increasing vehicle weight would drastically reduce the horsepower ratings. 1978 and '88 represent the 4th and 5th generations of the Grand Prix, minimizing size and weight while improving comfort. 1997 and 2004 marked the final revisions for the Pontiac Grand Prix, using a new W-body platform and improving styling, luxury and efficiency.
