The Start of the Grand Prix

Since its inception, the Pontiac Grand Prix has always strived to be a sporty coupe commended for its posh and comfortable interior. With a growing popularity in luxurious cars, the Grand Prix was introduced in 1962 as a vehicle that could offer exceptional performance with lavish style. Initially created in response to the success of Ford’s Thunderbird, it was introduced as a full-size coupe based on the Pontiac Catalina body with a two-door hardtop and slightly reduced trim. Used for all kinds of purposes—such as drag racing, autocrossing, and plain old cruising—the Grand Prix was desired for its dual ability to maintain both powerful engines and cozy features.

Racing Through the Years

Throughout the 1960s, the Grand Prix remained relatively unaltered, sporting its concave rear window and minimal exterior trim. Each new release increased the size and weight of the Grand Prix a bit more, making it more of a luxury-oriented vehicle, but its sales slowly declined in favor of smaller automobiles. All that changed in 1969 when John De Lorean, then head of engineering at Pontiac, redeveloped the Grand Prix and Pontiac GTO, focusing on style and performance. The switch was made from the Catalina platform to a smaller, lighter A-platform, improving the handling and making the Pontiac Grand Prix a hit with consumers. This modification began the trend of reducing the size of an automobile in order to improve its performance.

1973 brought the redesigned third generation of the Grand Prix to the public. This time the car size increased due to federal regulations for crash bumpers. This period would be the end of performance-based Grand Prix vehicles, as federal emissions regulations and increasing vehicle weight would drastically reduce the horsepower ratings. 1978 and 1988 represent the 4th and 5th generations of the Grand Prix, minimizing size and weight while improving comfort and offering the optional four-door sedan or the common two-door coupe. The next generation, in 1997, offered the 3.1L 3800 V6 with upgraded engine power, fuel efficiency, and suspension. The final generation, in 2004, used a new W-body platform offering a Base, GT, and GXP trim levels nearing 200 horsepower and a 3.8L V6 engine. The final year in 2008 offered only the base and GXP trim levels, abandoning the coupe body, and included a 303 horsepower 5.3L V8 for the GXP. Although the Grand Prix has been discontinued, it is still a sleek, stylish car known for its luxury and efficiency.
