Two Generations of the Lumina

This Chevy Lumina is not to be confused with the Lumina APV, a minivan that Chevrolet produced from 1989-1996. The Lumina name was applied to a number of body styles— coupe, sedan, and minivan—until the mid-90s, when each style was given a new model name.

There are two generations of the Chevy Lumina. The first featured a Lumina Sedan, Lumina Coupe, and the Lumina APV (All-Purpose Vehicle) for the 1990 model year. The Sedan and Coupe were built on the GM W-body, while the APV was built on the U-body. Buyers could choose between an inline-four and a V6 for the engine, and two trims were available, the base and the Euro.

One high performance coupe version, known as the Lumina Z34, was also available. Manning a sporty suspension, a V6 that could produce up to 210 horsepower, a dual exhaust, rear spoiler, sport bucket seats, and a unique rear and fascia, the Z34 looked like a car of its own and had a few more features than mentioned that distinguished itself from the other Luminas.

All of these models except for the sedan received a new nameplate. The coupe and the Z34 resurrected the Monte Carlo nameplate and the Lumina APV became the Venture. For the 1995 model year, the Lumina sedan rolled out in 1994 with a rounded, more aerodynamic shape, an improved interior, and two trims, the base and the LS. Later, an LTZ trim was available with a 3.1L V6 that could produce up to 160 horsepower or a 3.4L V6 that could produce up to 215 horsepower. The Lumina, however, was eventually replaced by the Impala, last available as a new model in 1999. For one year after that, the Lumina was available as a fleet-only vehicle.
