The Pontiac Tempest was introduced in 1960 for the 1961 model year. The Tempest was a low priced entry level compact designed by none other than Pontiac chief engineer John DeLorean. The Tempest was built with a unique drive train construction for the time. A tube ran down the center of the Tempest, connecting the engine in the front to the transaxle in the rear. This created an even weight distribution throughout the vehicle. This unique feature won the Tempest Motor Trend's "Car of the Year" award for 1961. The Tempest convertible was named a LeMans, which evolved into its own car for '63. In '64 the Tempest became a mid-size vehicle. The Tempest LeMans offered a performance package dubbed GTO, which would become Pontiac's most powerful sports car. This boosted sales of the Pontiac Tempest initially, but eventually the GTO became its own vehicle and stole sales from the other models. For '64 the Tempest was redesigned, stripped of front engine/rear transaxle combination, and moved to a more generic GM platform. In 1970 the final Pontiac Tempests were produced, due to dropping sales. Although discontinued, the Tempest helped to create one of the first muscle cars of the '60s, the Pontiac GTO.
