Ram is a brand of trucks established in 2009 as a division of Chrysler Group LLC. With a product lineup consisting of consumer and commericial work-oriented vehicles that range from light to heavy-duty trucks, to chassis cab vehicles and cargo vans, Ram is targeted towards the serious truck buyer.
After emerging from chapter 11 bankruptcy in June of 2009, and going through a re-organization overseen by the U.S. government, Chrysler Group LLC, now in alliance with and owned by Fiat, an Italian automaker, announced in October of that same year that they would be unbundling the Dodge brand in order to further refine its new strategy of focusing on brands. This decision came about primarily due to Fiat’s desire to create better separation between Chrysler’s commercial vehicles and those that were more consumer-oriented. As part of this corporate restructuring, the Dodge truck division was spun off from Dodge into its own brand and became its own separate subsidiary of Chrysler Group LLC, while all Dodge cars and other vehicles such as SUVs continued under the Dodge Car brand. The name of Dodge’s popular line of existing pickup trucks – the “Ram”- was chosen as the name of the newly established brand, now formally known as the Ram truck division within Chrysler Group LLC.
Starting in 2010, all existing light pickup and medium-duty trucks, as well as all future heavy-duty trucks and commercial cargo vans, manufactured by Chrysler were to be sold under the Ram brand while Dodge would switch over to selling an exclusively passenger car-based lineup. Even though the Dodge brand has since been split up and Ram trucks and Dodge cars are now marketed separately, the company has stated that "Ram trucks will always and forever be Dodges.” However, the company felt that it needed to restructure and reposition so that Ram and Dodge could have two different, and very distinct, brand identities. The ram head, the logo formerly used by Dodge, is now the Ram brand logo while Dodge’s logo was redesigned.
While the decision to separate Ram trucks from Dodge following Chrysler's alliance with its now Italian-parent Fiat S.p.A. was controversial at the time it was announced, with many critics proclaiming it didn’t make a whole lot of sense, both brands have been thriving since. Since the split, Ram has experienced tremendous sales growth and continued to gain market share year-over-year, while Dodge sales have increased as well. The breakup has allowed Ram to laser-focus solely on trucks and commercial vehicles, and to connect with the real truck customer.
