The Pontiac Trans Sport, Chevy Lumina, and Oldsmobile Silhouette are a series of minivans released in 1989 for the 1990 model year. The Trans Sport and its two siblings were manufactured by GM for direct competition with the Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager. The Trans Sport was the sporty model of the three, with the Lumina was priced as an entry level model and the Silhouette sold as a high class model. The first Pontiac Trans Sport had a few additional features to set it apart from the rest of the bunch. One innovation was wrapping the body in composite plastic paneling which resisted rusting and minor dents. Equipped with the level ride package, the Trans Sport had an air compressor and air pressurized rear shocks to maintain the Trans Sport height regardless of cargo weight. For convenience the Trans Sport also came with an air hose for inflating tires, toys, mattresses and more. The '94 Trans Sport was one of the first minivans to have a remote controlled power sliding side door. Eventually the Pontiac Trans Sport name was replaced by one of its own trim packages, the Montana, which was produced until 2006.
