The Buick Century was a series of full size performance vehicles during model years '36-42, '54-58, and a mid-size automobile from 1973-2004. The original Century had a small body with a V8 engine, sport performance being the goal. However, when it reappeared as a '73 model and like other cars of the 70's, the Buick Century was plagued by emissions regulations causing the transition toward a mid-size vehicle. The '73 model had a trim package called the Gran Sport, giving the Century a 455 in³ (7.5 L) V8 a bit more power. However, needs switched toward fuel economy and the Buick Century V8 engines quickly became V6's. However, for those that wanted a little additional sport, there were turbocharged V6 engines that performed well while maintaining decent gas mileage. Downsized again in the 80's, the Buick Century was offered as a coupe, sedan, or station wagon. The '97 model was the final time the Century would be redesigned. With the discontinuation of the skylark, the Buick Century would become Buicks' entry level model. A timeless approach to styling was employed, and relatively few differences exist between the '97 and final '04 models. Replaced by the Buick Lacrosse, the Buick Century had one final model with a special trim produced for '05 to commemorate over three decades of service.
