In 1999 the newest Cougar build was released based on the Contour platform, changing the Cougar to a sport compact vehicle. Unfortunately the new Cougar couldn't compete with other sport vehicles; improper marketing was cited as a reason. 2002 marked the final year of the Mercury Cougar.
