Dodge Neon

1995 was the first year of the compact Dodge Neon, replacing the Dodge Shadow. More powerful than similar compacts of the day, the Neon sported either 132 hp 2.0L SOHC or 150 hp 2.0L DOHC engine. Civic DX being around 102 hp, Toyota Corolla with 115 hp, the ford escort is the closest with 130 hp. The lightweight Dodge Neon was a favorite for SCCA autocross drivers. Able to accelerate quickly and handle well, the Neon ACR was offered only to SCCA drivers, and then eventually was made available to the public. Another trim package called the R/T was similar in performance to the ACR, but featured more luxuries. However, 1st generation Dodge Neon cars had several quality issues, including bad head gaskets and peeling paint. The 2nd generation ran from 2000-05. Numerous alterations were made to improve the quality of the Dodge Neon, but it was too little too late. The R/T trim package was offered again with a 2.0L magnum engine. Unfortunately the lack of the DOHC engine hurt the Dodge Neon's performance, making it disappear from the race tracks as well. The Dodge Neon was discontinued in '05 with limited numbers being sold as '06 models. The Dodge Neon can still be seen on tracks today, prized for their horsepower, fine handling, and low weight.
