Part of the Dodge Royal Line, the Dodge Coronet was a full-size vehicle from '49-59, and a mid-size car from '65-76. Coronet was an appropriate name for a car in the Royal line, as a Coronet is a small crown worn by royalty. The Coronet was a base model available as either a four door sedan or two door coupe. The powerhouse was a straight six or optional Red Ram V8 Engine. When it reappeared in '65 as a mid-size vehicle, the Dodge Coronet became performance oriented as with most other vehicles of the muscle car era. The newer Coronets were outfitted with the infamous Hemi engine, providing ridiculous amounts of horsepower to the relatively small vehicle. During the 70's the Coronet's performance was decreased in the face of emissions regulations. Focus was redirected toward improving handling and comfort. Rubber dampeners were installed to reduce vibration and cabin noise as part of Dodge's "Torsion Quiet" system. In 76' the final Coronet's were produced, being replaced the next year by the Dodge Monaco.
