Considered by some to be the first muscle car, the Pontiac GTO is truly a classic. It was the combined efforts of engine specialist Russell Gee and Pontiac Chief Engineer John De Lorean which brought the GTO to life. At the time General Motors had issued a policy prohibiting involvement in auto racing. The get around this, the engineers took a Pontiac Tempest and placed a 389 in³ V8 engine from a Pontiac Catalina in place of the standard 326 in³ V8. The resulting GTO (the name taken from the Ferrari 250 GTO) was a Pontiac LeMans package option and not its own vehicle, by using a loophole in GM policy, 5,000 units of the Pontiac GTO were released. Aggressive styling, a loud roaring engine, and loads of power made the GTO an instant hit, forcing it into becoming a separate vehicle line for the 1966 model. The next big change came in '69, when the Judge was released. A more powerful GTO, the judge was built for performance and speed. As with most muscle cars in the 70's, the Pontiac GTO had to compete with strict federal emissions regulations and waning public interest in muscle cars. Reverting back to a package option then finally discontinued in 1974, the Pontiac GTO was sadly taken off the market. A brief, unpopular GTO spin-off was released from 04-06, but was unsuccessful. Despite several petitions over the years for the re-release of the Pontiac GTO, it has yet to make a triumphant return.
