The Oldsmobile Delta 88 is another model of the popular Oldsmobile 88 full size car sold by GM from 1949 to 1999. The 88 brand was Oldsmobile's top selling line for 24 years from 1950 to 1974. The Delta 88 was produced in 1969 when it replaced the Oldsmobile Delmont 88. Several aspects were redesigned to create the Delta 88. First the wheelbase was lengthened by an inch to a total length of 124" The engine in the Delta 88 was a cubic inch 350 Rocket V8 that was rated at 250 horsepower. An optional 455 Rocket V8 was also available, outputting 310 hp. Typical for Oldsmobile's top of the line automobile, the Delta 88 was given power disc brakes, Variable-Ratio power steering, and a Turbo Hydra-matic transmission. The final generation of the Delta 88 featured a Voice Diagnostic System. A male voice was computer synthesized and would alert the car occupant of several possible problems. Warnings included "the headlights are on" while the vehicle was off and "engine coolant level is low." In the late 80's the Delta 88 was dropped in favor of just the brand Oldsmobile 88. Once again Oldsmobile's most successful car line had evolved, retiring the Delta 88 after years of service.
