The Oldsmobile 442 muscle car came into production in 1968 until 1991, though it initially appeared as an optional trim on the Olds Cutlass in 1964. The designation 4-4-2 isn't related to the displacement of the engine. The meaning has evolved over the years, but originally it meant Four barrel carburetion, Four on the floor (4 speed manual trans,) Two (dual) exhausts. Oldsmobile created the 442 in response to the popularity of the Pontiac GTO. The 442 was tested by Motor Trend and clocked 0-60 in 7.5 seconds with a top speed of 116 mph, not bad for a car weighing 3400 lbs. In 1968 Oldsmobile teamed with Hurst Performance, modifying the 442's exterior and interior trim as well as providing different drive train combinations for more power. In 1970 GM dropped its engine restriction and 442's were outfitted with 455 in³ V8 engines. Unfortunately emissions regulations decreased performance on the 442 and the muscle car never quite recovered. In '72 it returned to being only an option for the Cutlass. All 442's produced after this were no longer true performance cars. The Olds 442 was revived in '85 removed in '87, only to be brought back in '90 on the Cutlass Calais. Oldsmobile's powerful entry into the muscle car market was truly impressive, but like many other muscle cars, federal regulations did more damage than good. Now that Oldsmobile is no longer a brand, the Oldsmobile 442 is more collectible and desired than ever.
