The Jeep Wagoneer is one of the pioneering vehicles in the SUV market. Produced first by Kaiser-Jeep in 1963, it was so popular that it remained in production although the Jeep brand changed hands several times over the years. The Wagoneer won praise immediately for having power steering, an automatic transmission, and four wheel drive. From '66-69 the Super Wagoneer was produced featuring a larger V8 engine and power amenities not found on many vehicles of the time. The Super Wagoneer was considered the precursor to the Luxury SUV's of today. When AMC took control of Jeep in '70 they decided to revamp the Jeep lineup, upgrading features and improving performance. The '78 Wagoneer Limited included air conditioning, power-adjustable seats, power door locks and windows, cruise control, leather upholstery, and woodgrain trim all available for $10,500. Despite the high price, people readily bought the Jeep Wagoneer Limited. In '87 Chrysler purchased Jeep, making few changes to the vehicle. Rising gas prices and demand for smaller vehicles led to the Jeep Wagoneer's demise in 1991, though a poorly constructed Wagoneer returned for a final production year in '93. Jeep Wagoneers can still be found, wood grain intact, thanks in part to enthusiasts that rebuild and resell Wagoneers.
