The Dodge Charger represented Chrysler's 2nd bid for muscle car supremacy during the 60's. Released for the '66 model year, the Charger lagged behind the already popular Pontiac GTO and Dodge Charger pony cars. However it quickly gained ground and became an instant hit. The Charger featured several V8 engine options, including a 426 HEMI engine. The Charger became a racing success in the 1966 NASCAR Grand National Championship. In '68 the R/T Road/Track performance package was offered to the public. The 440 Magnum engine was standard putting out 375 hp. The infamous Bee stripes were also available as part of the R/T package. Unfortunately the Charger suffered the same fate as all muscle cars during the early 70's, emissions regulations hampered performance. Initially the Charger became a personal luxury vehicle, then in 1978, it was discontinued. However, the Charger has left an enduring legacy and has been featured in popular movies such as Bullitt (1968,) the Blade Trilogy, and most famously in the Dukes of Hazzard as the General Lee.
