No. Any small flat head screw driver or even a metal pick will pop off the metal rings. New ones/struts snap back on without tools.

You may need a small screw driver to get the locking pin out and a mallet to lightly tap the strut out out of the ball joint.

Chris, the mounting clips look like the clips on the hood struts for my new to me old Dodge P/U. In my case I used a small flat blade screwdriver to pop the clip off and the strut easily pulled off the fixed receiver ball and I pushed the new part on the fixed ball popped the new clip in place. It worked well on all four points. When I started, I was prepared for an hour +/- and plenty of profanity. I was in and out in 15 minutes and no cursing. Tools: small flat bladed screwdriver, slip joint pliers, a scratch awl (to get under the clip at first) and a broom stick. Tools used: Small screwdriver and broomstick. Hope this helps. David
