The Windstar's Replacement
The Freestar only lasted for one generation, and most see it as a continuation of the Windstar's third generation, but there's no question the Freestar was Ford's best minivan to date at the time of its release. Its trim levels-the SE, SEL, and Limited-were all carried over from the Windstar with the exception of the Sport, which separated into its own trim from the SE Sport trim of the second generation. The engines were different from the Windstar, offering a 3.9-liter V6 with 193 horsepower or a 4.2-liter V6 with 201 horsepower. It scored well on crash tests, could seat seven, and offered nice amenities for the lower trims such as A/C, a CD player, and keyless entry. Though short lived, the Freestar was a good minivan and turned out to be fairly dependable, ranking second in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study in 2009.
