Dorman Parts

Dorman Products, founded in 1918, has grown from a two man operation to one of America’s “Best Small Companies” according to Forbes Magazine. In 1918, brothers Jack and Lew Dorman started taking apart junked cars in order to sell replacement parts to the automotive aftermarket. It wouldn’t be long though until they saw an opportunity to start selling new parts. In 1925, Jack Dorman bought a punch press and started making and selling star washers from Cincinnati, Ohio. They then expanded beyond washers and by 1945, Dorman Products had a catalog with more than twenty different categories of parts.

In 1978, another pair of brothers, Richard and Steven Berman founded R&B Inc., to specialize in selling hard to find parts. In 1994, R&B acquired Dorman Products. By 1997, their sales had increased to $153 million with a line of 30,000 products. R&B then went on a spree of acquiring brands, including the Motormite and Help! brands. R&B eventually grew to include 50 brands. In 2006, in order to alleviate buyer confusion, R&B rebranded all its parts, and changed its name to match its most recognizable brand, Dorman. The company changed its NASDAQ trading symbol from RBIN to DORM. Today, the company produces over 103,000 different parts, including its OE Solutions parts, which are parts previously only available from the dealer.
