Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace an inside door handle on this 2003 Chevy Monte Carlo. We show you on the driver's side but the passenger's side is the same procedure. The items you'll need for this include a new interior door handle from 1AAuto.com, a flat blade screwdriver, a Phillips screwdriver, a T25 Torx driver, a putty knife, a drill, and a 5/16 inch drill bit.
Your door panel is held on with four screws. There's a Phillips screw here and a Phillips screw up here. Then down here, onto the pole handle, there are two T25 Torx screws. We'll just fast forward as Mike removes those. Pry out, behind this panel, the flat blade screwdriver, and then slide the panel forward and over the door handle. Then pry out on both sides of your door lock switch while pulling up on it. It should pull free.
There's an indent right here that you want to slide your putty knife into, and then just pry out on the clip. Then reach back behind the door panel and feel for the clips, and just pull out sharply to release the clips. Once you've release them all the way around, just lift the door panel up and then pull it back. Push the tab on this harness and pull it free. Do the same thing for this harness. Your door panel is free. Push on the tab on this harness and disconnect it. Unclip the harness from the door and pull it aside. Carefully, without damaging the water shield, you want to just peel it back.
Now, holding on your door handle is a rivet, just drill it out with your 5/16 inch drill bit. We'll fast forward as Mike does this. Unclip your door handle rod and pull it up and out. Do the same thing with your lock rod. Then pry up on these two clips and pull the rods free. Now, pry out on the door handle and it'll fall free.
Take your new door handle and put the tabs through, and then line it up and, we use a bolt but you can also use a rivet, whatever you have that will fit, then just tighten up your new bolt or use a rivet gun and replace the rivet. Reconnect your lock rod and just re-clip it. Then do the same with your door handle rod. Now, re-clip them into this clip, and just push those tabs down to lock it. Then we'll just fast forward as Mike replaces the cover around the handle and the water shield. Reconnect this harness and re-clip it to the door.
To reconnect your door panel, just start off by reconnecting these two harnesses. Just put this switch through here, and then line up these slots with these four tabs. Just lift the door panel up, and push those slots onto the tabs. Then just make sure the clips are wind up, and hit them into place around the sides of the door panel. Push your door lock switch back into this panel. Slide the panel over your interior door handle and slide it back into place. Then just replace those four screws, and you're all set.

Hi, I'm Mike Green. I'm one of the owners of 1A Auto. I want to help you save time and money repairing or maintaining your vehicle. I'm going to use my 20-plus years experience restoring and repairing cars and trucks like this to show you the correct way to install parts from 1AAuto.com. The right parts installed correctly: that's going to save you time and money. Thank you and enjoy the video.
In this video we're going to be showing you interior door handle replacement on this 2003 Monte Carlo, the procedure is basically the same for any 2000 to 2007. You'll need a Phillips head screwdriver, a T27 Torx driver, flat blade screwdriver, putty knife and a rag, a 3/8" drill and drill bit, and a coarse thread bolt. Now in this video I don't actually show you changing the door handle because this car has a good door handle on it and I didn't want to drill it off and bolt it back on just for the video. So I basically take you up to that point and then show you what you have to do from that point.
To remove the door panel, first you have to remove four screws: one Phillips here, a Phillips here, and then there's two T27 Torx screws right up in here. Now that you've removed those screws, you can pull out on this panel and then forward, and it comes off. Then, for your switch, you use a regular flat blade screw driver and pry out on one side and pull the switch out some, pull the whole switch, pry the other side.
Now, you want to use your, a putty knife and a rag, or paper towel or something just to . the paper towel kind of protects the paint, work it back in here and then work it up right into there. Then pull. Once you get that one, this panel kind of actually pulls freely kind of easily, just pull right on the outside edge. Then lift up and your door panel is off. You still have your mirror and your power window connected here. Now, looking in from behind, it's a little hard to shoot this, but basically you want to work . there's a tab in the back of your connectors here. You want to work your screwdriver right up in there, and then pull. I can show you afterwards here. Basically what you're doing is, right here, is where the tab goes in, so your just working your screwdriver in there and working it in there to release that tab. These connectors you can see right there, that's what you want to be pressing in. So now your door panel is off.
To access the inside of the door, you're going to want to disconnect your mirror connection here, which is pressing on this thumb tab. You'll actually want to pull that out, carefully use a screwdriver, kind of press on it from the other side, and pull it through. Then you carefully want to remove your water shield. You want to do this slowly, you don't want to rip or stretch this too much because this is what keeps the water from getting in and ruining your door panel and stuff.
Once you have the door panel off, you can see here the inside door handle, and there's the rivet right there. You need to drill that rivet out with probably a 3/8" drill and then these rods are just held in by little clips that you can actually just kind of push off and then the rods come up and out. Now this car has a good door handle in it so I'm not going to drill it off and reattach it, but you'd have to drill that rivet out and then you'd need a coarse thread bolt to replace that.
Now, we're ready for the door panel, push the power window, put that back up. I'm doing it blind so it's a little hard to tell where you're supposed to be. It goes back in, the power mirror goes back in, make sure your power door lock is up in the hole here. Take the top of your panel, and find where this hole is supposed to be here for the power mirror, so you kind of have the right spot. Push the top of it right here, and go down. Then make sure it's all lined up pretty good and then you can push it on. Then, this piece can go on, actually push the lock button in. Then, push the back of this in, then on. Then you have your four screws. You have two T27 screws. These you want to make nice and tight because they hold everything together as far as when you pull on the door. Do a quick test of everything: window, mirror, door locks. Everything's good.
