Hi, I'm Mike Green. I'm one of the owners of 1AAuto. I want to help you save time and money repairing and maintaining your vehicle. I'm going to use my 20 plus years experience restoring and repairing cars and trucks like this to show you the correct way to install parts from 1AAuto.com. The right parts installed correctly, that's going to save you time and money. Thank you and enjoy the video.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the headlights, both the bulbs and the complete assemblies, on this 2004 Intrepid. It is the same as any 94 to 04 Intrepid. Tools you'll need are a six and a half millimeter socket or actually a seven millimeter works because I didn't have a six and a half millimeter. Also, you might need a Phillips screwdriver or a torques driver to aim the headlights afterwards.
So you're thinking about either replacing your headlight bulbs or your headlights. Here's a before and after. You can see a new set of headlights really does a lot. Once again, before, they're cloudy, kind of dull, faded, and scratched and then a nice new set of headlights. It looks like you took about 100,000 miles off the front of your car.
To remove the headlights, whether you're replacing the whole assembly or the bulb, you want to open up your hood or bonnet as they call it in England, and there are two bolts here, one and two. I believe these bolts are six and a half millimeters because this is a seven millimeter socket and it goes on but it's got a lot of play. I was able to do it with a seven millimeter socket. You just want to carefully press it down on there really well, turn and you probably should be able to remove it. When I was doing this on the other side, I found that the seven millimeter socket didn't work for one so what I did was I grabbed it with a pair of vice grip pliers and then used a big adjustable wrench to turn the pliers. I think these are six and a half millimeter sockets which is kind of a rare size. Like I said, you'll probably be able to get it done with the seven millimeter.
I even tried some standard sizes, like quarter inch and 9/32's but those didn't' work. The bolts are big and long, once we get them out, they pull up and out. Now you lift your light kind of up on the corner here and it comes out. This is your side marker and blinker bulb. It just twists and pulls out. You need one of these orange style bulbs. They just pull out and back in. Your headlight bulbs, you'll probably want to use a screwdriver just to kind of help you pry up on these little prongs and pull off. Your headlight bulbs will then twist out and pull out and they push back in. Now obviously to remove your entire light, unplug the last bulb and the light comes out. This is the old light, and this is the new light from 1AAuto. It's pretty easy to see that the new light is whole lot more clear. They have polishing kits and some stuff like that but usually those only last you for a month or two. This is just a real easy thing to do.
Take the whole light out. New light from 1AAuto is going to mount in there all the same. Our light has two adjusters with Phillips screws, one here and one down here. This one down here is reachable through a small hole next to where you mount it. Obviously installing the light pretty easy. I'm plugging my two bulbs in, low beam and high beam. Then putting my signal bulb in, twisting. Then put the outside up in there and then push it right up in. Once you have it in place, work your screws in here. Then you want to use your wrench and I'm kind of pushing down on the bottom here, also here
So you basically push the bolt down in there, then push the headlight into place. Make sure the bolt goes down in and start it with your ratchet and socket. Then tighten them up. Don't tighten them too much because you want to make sure you can get them apart again someday. Once the head light's installed, for aiming purposes, there are two adjusting screws. The one on the outside here, that's very easy to get to and it adjusts up and down. So you turn it one way, you can see the beam goes up and then the other way and the beam goes down.
To adjust the beam left and right, there is a adjusting screw. It's kind of difficult to see, you can just see it down in that hole and you want to hold your screwdriver down in. It's a little difficult to get it on to that screw; you just got to be careful. You got to look down in there, use a flashlight. Put the screwdriver on there and then, it's probably difficult to see in the video, but you turn the screwdriver one way and it moves the headlight beam inward and the other way and it moves the headlight beam outward.
Just as we look at the car here, to properly aim the lights, basically from 20 feet away on a flat surface. You want to try and park your car on a flat surface, 20 feet from a wall, and the light should be aiming straight forward and also the low beams should be one inch down from the height of the bulb. You might want to measure the height of the bulb on the car and then the concentration of the light should be one inch down from that measurement. The high beams should be level. So if you measure up to bulbs on your high beams and say its 28 inches, the concentration of your bulb should be 28 inches high on the wall.

In this video we're going to show you how to replace the headlights on this '97 Dodge Intrepid, same as any '95 to '97. We're going to show you both replacing the headlight assembly and just the bulb. The tools you will need are a T15 Torx driver as well as a pair of pliers, preferably the vice grip style. With a pair of new headlights from 1A Auto you can take your Intrepid from looking like this to a little fresher look like this; once again, before and after.
We'll start here. There's three screws, the one on the outside, a small one in the middle and another one on the outside. The ones in the outside are usually a problem on this vehicle. I'm speeding up here. You can see me unscrewing that. It doesn't actually ever come out, that's because the brass insert in the headlight actually broke free. The only screw that actually comes out cleanly is the small middle one. What you'll probably have to do is actually break your headlight and if they look like mine you won't mind. You'll see right here, you break the tab off the headlight and the reason why as we do a close-up here, you can see the little brass insert right there is stuck on the screw. They kind of seize together so you'll need to lock onto that with pliers or vice grips and then use your T15 torques driver to get the screw out of the insert.
We speed up here as I do that. Lock the vice grips on down low and then turn with the T15 torques driver up top, and we repeat that for any one of the ones that are like that. You can disconnect the headlight just by pulling that off right here. If you're just looking to change the bulb, the bulb twist this lock off, pull it off, and then the bulb pulls out. Here's your original light, new light from 1A Auto. It's pretty clear which one is more clear.
Installation. Take the little shipping protector off. We've put inserted the bulb in and then put that retaining ring back on, kind of put the headlight in place and then connect your headlight lead and then push the light back into place, making sure that it lines up with where the screws go down in on each side. Here with our screws, I put a little anti-seize compound on them. You can do that or just some grease or something, just so they come apart the next time a little easier. I'll just speed it up as I put these screws down in. You've kind of got to work the light, push it kind of back and forth, and get the screws all the way down in and then you push down on the screws as well to start them and keep the fast forward going as I tighten up the outer two screws. You want to tighten them up firm. They don't have to be extremely tight though. Then I install and tighten up that smaller middle screw.

Hi, I'm Mike Green. I'm one of the owners of 1A Auto. I want to help you save time and money repairing and maintaining your vehicle. I'm going to use my 20+ years experience restoring and repairing cars and trucks like this to show you the correct way to install parts from 1AAuto.com. The right parts installed correctly, that's going to save you time and money. Thank you and enjoy the video. In this video, we're going to show you how to change the headlight mounting brackets on this '97 Dodge Intrepid, same as any '93 to '97. Tools you'll need are Phillips screwdrivers, both regular length and short; 3/8 inch and 10 mm sockets with a ratchet and extension; a T15 torque driver; and a flat level surface to aim the headlights.
There's actually a bolt right up in here that you want to get to. You want to remove a series of screws, one, two, three, one way back in there. You want to remove a series of screws, one, two, three, four and then one underneath here, five. I'm going to fast forward through taking those screws off. You need to turn your wheels. I do have the car up on a lift, not necessary, it just makes it a lot easier to video. Like I said, fast forward through taking those screws off. There is a sixth one. It's up higher. You'll probably see me take it out. I didn't show that one to you in the first clip, but you do want to remove six screws. Pull it down, out, like that.
Now you'll see me use a 3/8 socket to remove the bolt up in that corner. I'm not sure if they're supposed to be 3/8 inch or 10 mm, but 3/8 inch seemed to work for me. Remove that one and also do the same thing on the other side of the vehicle. Now there's five 3/8 bolts to remove. I'm going to use some air power. There's not going to be in there with that much torque. We'll speed up through doing that. The biggest problem I had here actually was the bolts would get stuck into the socket, so I just use a screwdriver to poke them out. We'll finish those up. Once the bolts are off each side, you can go ahead and pull and on this side. If you have fog lights, disconnect the fog lights from each side and your cover is now off. You don't have to, but generally, and most likely, if you're replacing this bracket, your headlight or your parking light is all busted up anyways, but to remove the parking light, there's a little tab right there. You push that sideways and pull out lightly on your parking light and pull it out. Twist the bulb. Again, if you're replacing that bracket, you're probably replacing the headlight too, but mine is actually in good shape, so I'm going to take it off. T15 screws, one here.
I'm going to speed this up and take out the, there's three screws, two long ones on the side and one shorter one in the middle that you just need to loosen up. Take the headlight out and unplug it. You can pretty easily see the bracket held in by four 10 mm bolts, one, two, one that comes up from the bottom here, three and then four right here. A little more fast forward as I remove those four bolts and remove the bracket. Old bracket, new bracket from 1A Auto. The only thing I do recommend is the bolts are a different thread. I actually just remove the clip off the new one and put the old clip on. Make sure your harness is up through there. Speed up as I tighten those up firm, not over tight. Notice that I did thread all the bolts in first. Reinstall the headlight.
Fast forward. You are going to notice that I turned those screws a little longer than when you take them out, a little bit tighter fit and a little bit better tolerances on the new one. Then I'm going to use a Phillips screwdriver and there are two screws, the one towards the inside of the car controls the left and right aim of the headlight. The one on the outside of the car controls the up and down. You want to adjust them. You can actually look at your old bracket to get a preliminary idea of where they should be. When you adjust them, you have the green leveling bar right there in the middle. Make sure that's right in the middle when your vehicle is on a level surface. Then reinstall the parking light.
A quick word on headlight aiming. Basically, you want to have the vehicle on a level surface and ideally you want to have a wall 20 feet away. According to Massachusetts law, both the headlights should be aiming straight ahead. There shouldn't be any left to right. They should be aiming straight ahead. The low beam headlights should aim one inch below the level of the headlight bulb. The high beam headlights should be concentrated at the same level as the headlight bulb.
You can see on each side it goes into a couple clips that are up underneath here. Connect our fog lights. Then put it up into place roughly paying attention on one side. You want to get these up to where the; get these up to go into the clips. Push it back in. Same thing on this side. This is a little awl. It's always good to have one of these. Put it in the hole, line it up. If you line up one, you can go and find the other ones. I'll use the awl. You poke it through a hole and then find the hole in behind it. Line up the fender, hold the fender in place and then put the screw in. Remove the awl and put the screw in. Do that for all six screws. Get them nice and snug. They don't have to be extremely tight. You want them firm. We'll speed through here again. Put in those 3/8 bolts and tighten them up nice and firm. Again, I have the car up on a lift, not necessary. It just makes it easier to video.
