What is a Rear Window Defroster Switch and where is it Located
The rear window defroster switch allows you to activate a heating element in the rear window of the vehicle. That heats up the rear window and melts ice and snow, or evaporates condensation. This allows you to see out the rear window without spending so much time scraping ice and snow off of it. The rear defroster is sometimes called the rear defogger, demister, or deicer.
The rear defroster switch is a button on your dashboard near your other heating and air conditioning controls. It will have a picture of a window with wavy heat arrows on it. The switch normally has an LED light that turns on when you press it. The defroster has a timer so that it only stays on for ten to fifteen minutes at a time. This prevents the rear window glass from overheating.
How do I Know if my Rear Window Defroster Switch Needs to be Replaced?
If the rear defroster does not come on when you press the switch, then the switch may be faulty. The wiring inside the switch may be shorted, or there may be problems with the physical action of the switch. If the switch is difficult to press or fails to stay on, then you’ll probably have to replace the switch.
Of course, if the defroster doesn’t work when the switch is on, there might be other problems. The fuse for the switch may be blown. There could also be problems with the relays or the wires that carry power from the switch to the rear window. You can check the switch with a multimeter to identify it as the source of the problem. If the switch is receiving power but not outputting power when pressed, then something is wrong with the switch. Once you have pinpointed the problem to the switch and have grown tired of cleaning off your window by hand, then it’s time to replace your defogger switch.
Can I Replace a Rear Window Defroster Switch Myself?
Replacing your defroster switch is pretty easy. In fact, when you consider all the time you would have to spend scraping ice, you’ll probably save time in the end, by just replacing the switch. In some cases you’ll be able to simply pry the switch out of the dashboard with a screwdriver, disconnect the wiring harness, connect the new switch and push it in. In other cases you may have to remove the entire heating and A/C control panel, and remove any bolts or fasteners that hold the switch to the panel. Then you can swap in the new switch.
