The Pontiac Trans Am first appeared in 1969 as a performance package on the Pontiac Firebird vehicle line. Only 697 of the highly collectible original Trans Am's were made and only 8 of those were convertibles. Painted Polar White with two blue stripes, the Trans Am was beautiful and powerful. The Trans Am had a 400 in³ engine output around 345 hp with the Ram Air IV option. The second generation Trans Am featured what is known as the last true muscle car engine. Appearing in the 70's at the height of strict EPA emissions regulations, the SD-455 was a muscle car powerhouse. Pontiac engineers stated that it only output 290 hp, but in truth the SD-455 produced over 370 hp. Slight modifications to a Trans Am with an SD-455 could bring over 500+ hp easily. Even as the engines were made progressively weaker, the Pontiac Trans Am would still stay strong. In 1989 the production Turbo Trans Am needed only slight modification to become an Indy pace car, having an advertised top speed of 150 mph. For nearly four decades the Pontiac Trans Am has been a part of American Culture. Discontinued in 2002, the powerful and celebrated muscle car left a lasting legacy.
