The Mercury Cougar has changed its class several times over its four decades of production. The 1967 Cougar shared its platform with the Ford Mustang and was a pony car with a European design. The famous XR-7 trim package featured a wood-grained steering wheel, dashboard, and leather seats. The Mercury Cougar filled a new niche as a pony car with luxury features. When the Federal emissions regulations killed the muscle car, the Cougar shifted toward the personal luxury car market. In 1999 the newest Cougar build was released based on the Contour platform, changing the Cougar to a sport compact vehicle. Unfortunately the new Cougar couldn't compete with other sport vehicles; improper marketing was cited as a reason. 2002 marked the final year of the Mercury Cougar.
