Released in 1964, the Chevrolet Chevelle was a highly successful mid-size vehicle for GM, with different versions ranging from a family car to a high-powered muscle car. The family car Chevelle Malibu package was popular and sold well until 1977 when it was replaced altogether by the Chevrolet Malibu line of vehicles. However, the most famous of the Chevelle packages is the Chevrolet Chevelle SS, which appeared as its own model line in 1966. Built using a unique engine and other specialized equipment, at first the Chevrolet Chevelle was underpowered compared to other muscle cars of the era, but that soon changed. An engine modification appeared in the '66 model, making the 396 V8 now a standard feature as well as adding the Chevy Chevelle's signature two hood scoops. The largest improvement would be in the model year 1970, when the Chevrolet Chevelle SS boasted the most powerfully rated engine in muscle car history, the LS6 454. This beast of a machine provided 450 bhp and 500 ft\xb7lb of torque, making it the strongest Chevy Chevelle SS offered. As with most muscle cars during the 1970's performance was plagued by strict emissions regulations and the Chevelle was no exception. Adding insult to injury was the fact that the SS package could be added to any 1972 Chevelle, meaning there were Chevelle SS's that output 130 bhp. The 1977 model was the last Chevelle, after that all Chevrolet Chevelles were replaced by the Chevy Malibu. But the spirit of the Chevrolet Chevelle lives on in Chevy muscle car enthusiasts everywhere.
