What are Tapered Bearings and Why Use Them?

Tapered bearings are better than roller ball bearings at handling forces exerted on the bearing during cornering (known as axial load) in trucks and large cars. 

Roller ball bearings have spherical ball bearings between two straight rings (called races). Tapered bearings use tapered rollers shaped like flat-topped cones and two races angled from the outside to the inside of the bearing. The greater the angle, the more axial load the bearing can handle.

Your model came from the factory with tapered bearings. This type of bearing handles cornering forces better for trucks and large cars. Roller ball bearings work well for smaller cars, but replacing a tapered bearing with a roller ball bearing will result in increased wear and faster failure.

BHA54036 Axle / Spindle Nut Torque Specification

  1. step : Removing the Wheel (1:00)
    • Loosen the lug nuts with the vehicle on the ground
    • Remove the cotter pin from the axle nut if it has one
    • Loosen the axle nut
    • Raise the vehicle with a floor jack
    • Secure the vehicle on jack stands
    • Remove the lug nuts
    • Pull off the wheel
  2. step : Removing the Brake Pads (3:22)
    • Remove the bolts from the caliper bracket
    • Pull the caliper off
    • Put the caliper aside
    • Pry the brake pads off with a flat blade screwdriver
  3. step : Removing the Brake Rotor (4:15)
    • Remove the two bolts from the caliper bracket
    • Pull off the brake caliper bracket
    • Remove a screw from the rotor if it has one
    • Strike the drum surface of the rotor with a hammer to loosen the rotor
    • Pull the rotor off
    • Clean the hub surface with a wire brush
  4. step : Removing the Hub Assembly (5:18)
    • Remove the axle bolt
    • Place a punch in the axle hole and hammer it to release the hub from the splines
    • Remove the bolts from the back of the hub
    • Remove the wheel hub and bearing
  5. step : Installing the Hub Assembly (7:53)
    • Insert the wheel hub into the spindle
    • Tighten the hub bolts
    • Reinstall the axle nut
  6. step : Installing the Brake Rotor (8:58)
    • Apply grease to the hub surface
    • Put the rotor onto the hub backwards
    • Spray the rear of the hub with brake cleaner
    • Pull off the brake rotor
    • Slide the brake rotor on
    • Spray the front of the rotor with brake cleaner
    • Put the caliper bracket into place
    • Insert the two into the caliper bracket
    • Torque the two bolts
  7. step : Installing the Brake Pads (9:48)
    • Put the brake pads into the caliper bracket
    • Apply grease to the back of the brake pads
    • Push back the caliper piston with grove lock pliers
    • Put the brake caliper into place
    • Insert the two bolts into the caliper
    • Torque the two bolts
  8. step : Reattaching the Wheel (11:01)
    • Slide the wheel into place
    • Start the lug nuts by hand
    • Tighten the lug nuts preliminarily
    • Lower the vehicle to the ground
    • Torque the lug nuts in a crossing or star pattern
    • Torque the axle nut
