Ken Johnson and Norm McDonald founded K&N Engineering, Inc. in 1964 in California. As off-road motorcyclists who were tired of replacing disposable air filters that—especially off the road—didn’t last too long, Johnson and McDonald tried to replace the traditional paper air filters with cotton to increase air intake. The filter was a hit, and since then more off-roaders have navigated to the product, making K&N the brand of choice for most motor sports and off-road enthusiasts.

What separates a K&N filter from the standard air filter is its ability to be washed and reused, a technology invented in 1969. The filters are manufactured with an aluminum wire mesh that’s coated over a cotton guaze filter to protect it from harmful debris. They can be cleaned and restored with water and a special cleaning oil.

Before offering air filters in 1969, K&N sold and lent motorcycles and accessories. It expanded its inventory by offering oil filters in 1980s and air intake systems in 1992. Today, K&N is seen as a leading innovator and supplier of high-quality filters, air intake systems, and performance parts and accessories.
