Your fuel system uses both vacuum and pressure to ensure that as few gasoline vapors reach the air as possible. The gas cap regulates this balance. The cap has relief and pressure valves that regulate the pressure in the tank. Over time the gas cap can cease to work properly due to dirt, wear, and damage. In modern cars this will cause your check engine light to come on (usually after you fill up). If you notice your check engine light comes on after a fill up first check the cap for tightness. Then give the light a few days to go off. If your gas cap is the culprit then this replacement is what you need. Most cars the light will go out after 10-12 cycles of the key as long as nothing else is affecting the fuel vapor system

Hey, friends. It's Len down at 1A Auto. Today, we're going to be doing a very simple job, a fuel cap on a 2016 Ram 1500. This is going to be the same on most any vehicle. For this particular application, it's what we're doing.
Here we go. We're going to come over to this right here. Open it up. Here's our old gas cap. Might notice it wobbles around quite a bit. Maybe have a check engine light for an EVAP leak. That could be possible because of this seal right along here, or even right in there. There's a little valve. Basically, you want to check it. If you see any cracks, debris, garbage on there, just replace it. Very easy.
Here, we have our old cap. Has a whole bunch of nice words on there. You can read them beautifully. Here we have our new cap. Also some nice words. Just a couple cautionary things. You know, be careful and wear safety glasses. Turn until it clicks.
Anyway, turn it around and we got a nice seal over here. This is the new one, obviously. The old one, it's got a decent seal. Looks like it's still okay. There's a valve in there and a valve in here. Can't really see them, but we're going to go with the assumption that, yeah, they're in there. Same size. Looks like it should screw on perfectly.
Let's go ahead and do it. We're going to take this new one, quality 1A Auto part. We're going to put it in and turn it to the right 'til we hear it click. Close this.

In this video, we go over, basically, gas cap removal and replacement . that's pretty easy . and also some of the basic functions of the gas cap.
Gas cap replacement: no big secret here. You take it off and you put the new one on, but more what I want to talk about is, why would you want to replace your gas cap. Your gas cap actually regulates the pressure in your system. I'm going to remove this bolt. A lot of the gas caps are held in by a strap here, 10mm bolt on this car. Simply remove the bolt. We'll reinstall this bolt.
Maybe you've gone to the gas station and forgotten to put your cap back on. The check engine light will go on, because your fuel system monitors the pressure in the fuel tank, and your gas cap is actually the valve that keeps that pressure. This is a brand new cap, never had gas on it or anything. What I'm going to do is suck on it a little bit. You hear that little duck call? That's the valve inside. There's rubber and metal springs and stuff inside that as the fuel pump draws fuel out of the tank, it builds up a certain amount of vacuum and then allows air into the system. What will happen, is it'll go bad and your gas cap can actually cause the check engine light to go on. So, a new cap from 1A Auto, goes right on, and tightens up. Let's just make sure we tighten that bolt back up a bit, that had the strap on it. Hopefully if your gas cap has gone bad and is causing your check engine light to come on, that'll fix your problem. We hope this helps you out.

I bought this gas cap in an attempt to resolve a 'check engine' light issue I was having. The fit and seal was perfect, and the light reset itself inside of 2 days. The only drawback is the cap is not tethered, like the OEM cap is. If you're having a an 'evap purge system' error code, try this cap!
Perfect

The item arrived on time and in good shape. I haven't been able to give it to my grandson yet, as I ordered it for his truck to try and get the "service engine - gas cap" warning to go out, so I don't know if it works or not.
