What are Tapered Bearings and Why Use Them?

Tapered bearings are better than roller ball bearings at handling forces exerted on the bearing during cornering (known as axial load) in trucks and large cars. 

Roller ball bearings have spherical ball bearings between two straight rings (called races). Tapered bearings use tapered rollers shaped like flat-topped cones and two races angled from the outside to the inside of the bearing. The greater the angle, the more axial load the bearing can handle.

Your model came from the factory with tapered bearings. This type of bearing handles cornering forces better for trucks and large cars. Roller ball bearings work well for smaller cars, but replacing a tapered bearing with a roller ball bearing will result in increased wear and faster failure.

Wear and Tear

This item is backed by a warranty against defects in materials and workmanship under its intended use. The warranty does not cover normal wear and tear. Please keep your invoice for proof of this warranty.

  1. step : Removing the Wheel (0:49)
    • Pry off the center cap with a flat blade screwdriver
    • Loosen the lug nuts with the vehicle on the ground
    • Raise the vehicle with a floor jack
    • Secure the vehicle on jack stands
    • Remove the 21mm lug nuts
    • Pull off the wheel
  2. step : Removing the Brake Pads (1:16)
    • Remove the two 17mm bolts from the brake caliper
    • Pry the brake pads into the caliper with a flat blade screwdriver to push in the pistons
    • Pull the caliper aside
    • Pull the two springs off of the brake pads
    • Pry the brake pads off with a flat blade screwdriver
  3. step : Removing the Brake Rotor (2:16)
    • Remove the two 21mm bolts from the brake caliper bracket
    • Pull off the brake caliper bracket
    • Strike the rotor with a hammer to loosen it
    • Pull the rotor off
  4. step : Preparing the New Brake Pads and Rotors (2:50)
    • Clean the rotor with brake parts cleaner
    • Apply grease to the brake pad tabs
    • Apply grease to the caliper slides
  5. step : Installing the New Brake Rotor (4:06)
    • Slide the rotor on
    • Put the bracket back into place
    • Start the two 21mm bolts by hand
    • Tighten the 21mm bolts to 100 foot-pounds of torque
  6. step : Installing the New Brake Pads (4:40)
    • Install the new brake pads into the bracket
    • Push on the brake pad springs
    • Put an old pad in the caliper
    • Use a large C-clamp and the old pad to push the pistons back
    • Put the caliper on
    • Thread the two 17mm bolts by hand
    • Tighten the 17mm bolts to 60 foot-pounds
  7. step : Reattaching the Wheel (6:13)
    • Slide the wheel into place
    • Start the lug nuts by hand
    • Tighten the lug nuts preliminarily
    • Lower the vehicle to the ground
    • Tighten the lug nuts to 100 foot-pounds in a crossing or star pattern
    • Reattach the center cap
  8. step : Testing the Brakes (7:11)
    • Check the brake fluid level
    • Add brake fluid if necessary
    • Pump your brakes repeatedly until they feel firm
    • Test your brakes at 5 miles per hour and then 10 miles per hour
    • Road test the vehicle

It will work with either style 4x4 actuators, but there are more fit details if you look at the fit list.
