Should You Purchase This Genuine OEM General Motors Electric Power Steering Motor?

Are you having issues with your power steering? This General Motors OEM power steering motor may be just the thing you need to get your steering and handling back.

Many GM cars use electric power steering instead of a hydraulic system like most cars. Instead of a power steering pump, these cars have an electric motor to assist the driver in turning the wheels. Like any other electric part, that motor can burn out, especially under hard use. If the motor fails, you'll experience many of the classic symptoms of power steering loss. It will take extra effort to turn, especially at parking lot speeds. It might feel like the steering wheel is trying to fight you. Electric power steering systems also have sensors to check that it's working right. Many GM cars have a power steering warning light, or you might get an OBD trouble code if your power steering fails.

You'll want to be careful when diagnosing electric power steering problems, to make sure that the motor really is the culprit. Be sure to check that the fuse for the motor isn't blown. You'll also want to use a voltmeter or test light to check that power is getting from the battery to the motor. If the motor's getting power, but not helping you steer, then you'll want to replace it.

Replacing the power steering motor is a very involved job, but it's possible for a DIYer to do it. The motor is attached to the steering column, so you'll have to remove the dash panels and all the steering column trim. You may have to separate the steering column to reach the motor. Then you'll unbolt the motor from the steering column. Then just bolt the motor on and put everything back together.

If you need to replace your power steering motor, this genuine General Motors OEM part is the perfect replacement. It's the same part that originally came on your vehicle, built to strict quality control standards. This motor is guaranteed to fit a number of GM cars from 2005-2011, including Chevy Cobalts, Pontiac G5s, and Saturn Ions. You can see if your vehicle is a guaranteed fit on the "Vehicle Fit" tab.

Customer Q&A
Ask a question to 1A Auto customers who purchased the product
what problems did you have before installing this? Was the power steering completely dead or would it work for about 5 minutes at a time after starting the engine?
Jaydon U May 3, 2020
My power steering was completely dead. Installing the new unit resolved it and has been working totally fine since. Installing new one took maybe 30 minutes start to finish
B R May 4, 2020
I didnt have any power and it was very hard to steer a message will come on the dashboard. I would turn off the car and restarted it and it will operate just like nothing happened. once I replaced it I did not have that problem any more. order this part from A1 but it came out without the o ring. had to use the old one.
Marco H May 4, 2020
Hey, my car is a 07 Chevy HHR with same system you have.mine would be fine and then blow the fuse and then no P.S.I’d replace the fuse and sometimes get several days before it blew again. Bought new P.S. motor put it in & fine ever sense, a bit of a tight fit and a little cramped for me to install but certainly not a hard job.The fuse always lasted for a day or several days but that fuse cost about $6bucks a pack of 2 hope this helped, there is a good step by step video out there
Jimmy V May 5, 2020
I would loose all power steering at low speeds and idle and sometimes it became intermittent after starting the car
Willie W May 5, 2020
Is this 40volts ?
Nathan A May 14, 2020
Thank you for your inquiry. We do not have this available as a specification, however, this is a GM OEM part and as long as it is listed to fit your vehicle it will have the same voltage as the original part. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Great Outcome
The power steering went out on my 2007 Chevy HHR with 108,000 miles. Took it to my mechanic, he said they would need to replace the entire steering column to the tune of $ 1,000. Took a chance on just replacing the electric motor. Found one on the 1aauto website and ordered it. Fair price, quick ship, arrived in great shape. Had it installed in about 1 hour. Great outcome!!

Great replacement part
Excellent fitment and quality upon initial inspection. Once I installed the part and starting driving my vehicle I immediately noticed the difference from the old unit that I had removed; this new power steering motor is much smoother than the stock motor and the steering feels firmer and more precise than before. Very happy!

Purchase & Refund
I purchased two parts for my car, one from these guys and one from somebody else. We ended up not needing the part from these guys, but they were extremely timely, courteous, and helpful in giving us our refund My experience with them has been great so far, and I am likely to buy from them in the future.

Saturn Electric Power Steering Motor
Item shipped and was received as advertised. It beat expectations on delivery, arrived ahead of time. Install went smoothly, easier than I anticipated. Unfortunately, for me, after installation I discovered that this component wasn’t the issue upon attempting to start the car but based on research this part usually fails after 100,000 miles, so at least it’s installed. I’m about to install a new starter based on further research of the Saturn and other information that I gathered on electrical components that fail on this vehicle.
