Hi, I'm Mike Green. I'm one of the owners of 1A Auto. I want to help you save time and money repairing or maintaining your vehicle. I'm going to use my 20-plus years experience restoring and repairing cars and trucks like this to show you the correct way to install parts from 1AAuto.com. The right parts installed correctly: that's going to save you time and money. Thank you and enjoy the video.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the door handle in this 1986 IROC-Z. This door handle fits a lot of different GM vehicles from the late 70's to early 90's. A lot of them either break totally or, on this vehicle, the spring is broken so the handle can rattle around and make a bunch of noise. The tools you'll need, and these tools will vary from vehicle to vehicle . most of the tools are necessary just to get the door panel off . are T27 and T10 Torx drivers, medium and small size flat blade screwdrivers, 8mm and 10mm wrenches or socket and ratchet and a door panel clip tool or a putty knife.
On our car, the door handle is not broken, but its very rattling. Anybody who knows these cars, knows you don't need any more rattles and squeaks than what's already designed into them. Here I'm going to actually speed through taking the door panel apart. If you want to see this in regular speed, if you haven't watched our other video already, just check out our other video for the Camaro door panel removal. You can see this in a regular speed but you can probably figure enough out just by watching this.
With your door panel off, you can see up in here. Here's your handle and the two nuts you need to remove and the clip that's on the latch rod. The first thing you want to do is to reach up in here. You'll feel two nuts to hold it and then the clip. I'm just going to use my hand. Pull that clip off and move that rod to the side. Now, my handle really flops around. The nuts on the back of the handle are 7/16 inch. I'm going to need a 7/16 inch wrench. I'm going to go for the one that's behind the glass first. I use one hand to guide the wrench onto the nut. Here's one of them. Here's the other one. Now, you see the handle comes right up and out and you can see the spring is gone.
Even though we know our car needs a whole lot more than just replacing a door handle, just do a quick wash before you put the new one on. Get all the dirt off. Here's a new handle from 1A Auto. It has a good spring intact. Right in, get it in place. So, these nuts are called speed nuts. They actually cut a groove themselves. You have to basically hold your handle with one hand. Pull up with the first one on, and then, basically, you use your wrench, and push on the nut somewhat, and turn it at the same time. Get that one started. What I'm going to do with this one, after trying unsuccessfully, is put it on the wrench. Get it in place, and bring my wrench way back, and then push on the wrench. Start it, and now I'm tightening both of them. We'll just speed it up here as I tighten those two nuts up. Now you want to reach in here, and make sure you flip the clip down. Put the rod in. I'm doing this pretty much all by feel. The new handle clips in place. Now, here I'm just going to try the key on. Put the window down for a test. You want to make sure that if you didn't put something together quite right that you can get the door back open. Now, at this point, with your new door handle on there and it's not rattling. It's working correctly. Then you would want to reinstall the door panel just by reversing the procedure that you saw earlier, or, if you want, see our video for door panel installation.
