In this video we'll be doing a tailgate handle on a 2004 GMC Sierra. Same as any 99-06 Sierra Silverado. Only tools needed are a half inch wrench and an Exact-o knife if you have a Rhino liner in your truck. Also if you're going to order the tailgate handle we do recommend ordering the bezel as it's kind of difficult to get off without breaking it and actually we found on our truck it had already been broken. So it'll just save you a little time.
Okay, so to remove your tailgate handle the first thing you want to do it is remove this bezel. Basically there are two pins that go down and then it clips in. So you want to push down on top and then pull out, this is interesting. This truck has already been damaged and somebody used two sided tape to put it in there. See the close up, the tabs are broken off. It commonly happens. Two sided tape is okay for awhile, the problem is what happens is these trucks, the dirt just kind of swirls up and around here and sooner or later the two sided tape is going to let go and this thing's going to look like that.
Here on the tailgate you've got three bolts, you can see ones already loose because I was experimenting a bit. This truck's got a Rhino liner in it and a lot of trucks do now. If you don't obviously you can just take these bolts off but if you do have a Rhino Liner you want to use a knife and you just basically want to cut very carefully, so you don't cut your fingers off, cut each hex. I'm trying to do this quick. If you don't cut this off you won't be able to get your wrench on there. You could probably force your wrench on there but this is the best way not ruin your bolts. Just kind of back it in there and peel it off. You don't have to get it all off, it doesn't have to be perfect but you definitely need to get enough off so that you can get your wrench on there. Okay it's a half a inch, you push down and the bolt comes up and out. You want to remove these three bolts.
As I was taking these out I wasn't filming because you don't really need to see me tearing out but something funny, this has washers and the Rhino Liner has actually trapped the washers in there but that's okay. You can just remove it to that point and you'll still be able to remove your handle. You just back it out and you can hear my handle just dropped down there's. We're going to put our bolts on our 1A Auto magnetic tray.
Okay here's your handle and there's two rods right here held in by clips and basically you just need to move these clips down. Okay and the rod pulls out and then there's your tailgate handle. New handle, see it's all basically the same as the old handle. Okay what you want to do always, is lubricate. Any point where it might pivot, spray them with a bunch of stuff. Put it in here and it'll attach. This goes that way. Push them in. Push these rods into the clips. They don't want to go easily, there's it goes, it's kind of working in a little bit. You basically do it one side at time, just kind of grab the rod, push on the tailgate. Grab this rod, push on the tailgate and it'll open up.
Okay then down here and we'll take the handle and we can line it up by and I'll need my wrench here. These washers are kind of stuck in here. Get that bit with no problem. The last one here. As far as tightening, it doesn't have to be incredibly tight. Holding it with my fist, and that's good. So we have our new bezel here and here's the old one, you can see the little teeth that are broken off. Remove some of the two sided tape because it needs to bite under the metal and that will just get in the way. Basically this just goes in. Push down on it and there you go all set.

In this video, we'll be installing a tailgate cable on a 2004 GMC Sierra. It's basically the same as any GMC Sierra or Silverado from 1999 to 2006. The only tool you'll need is a 1/2 inch wrench.
Open up the tailgate. You got a bolt here. It's a ½ inch bolt. Remove that. If it's frayed, you can replace it. Not a difficult thing to replace at all. Most people can do it. If you're wondering how, that's how. A couple of keys, make sure if you're replacing one, the other one's in good shape. You don't want the tail gate to fall because if it falls, it will hit the bumper and it will get dented. Don't take them off both at the same time.
Just one little thing: When you're tightening it, you see the tailgate cable's made to go around the flint in this bolt. You need to lift up and make sure the tailgate cable goes on the bolt, and then tighten it. This allows that to keep moving. If you're tightening it up with getting it in that right spot, basically what will happen is your tailgate will just going to stay like this. This would end up pinching into there and probably damaging and scratching things. That's about it.

First things you're gonna wanna do is make sure that your tailgate is down. Once you have it open and down, you're gonna see these three bolts right there. Remove those using a 13-millimeter socket. It's nice and tight. All right. Let's get these out of here. Wiggle this handle around, so it's nice and free. With this black bezel, the next thing you're gonna wanna have is one of these nice plastic trim tools. The reason why we're gonna use plastic is because we're gonna come in between the bed and the plastic shroud right here. Just go ahead and come right here. Push it. Do the same thing right there. Once you have the top broken free, just go ahead and lift this straight up and draw it away.
Go ahead and come in between here with a nice flathead screwdriver. Pull that clip down. Grab this rod, and slide it out. Do the same to the other side. Let's go ahead and get the handle out of here. Let's go ahead and get this handle in here. Weasel it in. There we are. Now, you're gonna grab your connecting rods here. Slide it in, and then lock it down. Slide it in. Bring this around. Lock it in. Give it a nice shake. Do the same to the other side.
So, now with this nice and loose, we can continue on to installing this. If you were to pay attention, on the backside, you're gonna see that you have a couple little pitons. And then, right here, you have some hooky-dos. When you go to install this, you're gonna put the bottom in first, so that the pitons go down into here. They'll latch in, and then just roll it in, and it'll latch. Just like this. In.
So, now from inside the bed, you can see the backside of the tailgate. We're just gonna kinda wiggle the handle around until we can see our bolt holes. Grab your bolts. Go ahead and start all three of them in before you tighten any of them down. Let's go ahead and snug them up. Let's give it a test. Perfect.

In this video, we're going to show you how to replace a Tailgate hinge on this 2002 GMC Sierra 2500HD. It's the same process on most 1999 to 2006 GMC Sierras and the Chevy Silverados. The tools you'll need are 13 millimeter socket and ratchet, penetrating oil, anti-seize and it's helpful to have two people as you'll see in this video.
You want to start by just putting the tailgate down. As you can see, the hinge on this truck is in pretty bad shape. You want to just push the cable up and then it should pull off. Depending on the condition, this could be a little difficult, but just keep moving it around, and it should pop off. Now, while he tries to get that cable off, this is where it's helpful to have a second person. So, the other person can hold the other side when it comes free, and the two of you can move it aside.
Here's a closer look at the condition the hinge was in. As you can see, it's in pretty bad shape. We just want to spray these bolts with some penetrating oil. This is going to help to remove them. Now, you just want to use a 13 millimeter socket and a ratchet to just remove these two bolts. We'll fast-forward as he removes these. Now, what you want to do is you just want to pull this bracket off. This one just comes right off. Just move it around a little bit. Then, we'll fast-forward as he removes the two 13 millimeter bolts on the opposite side. This hinge is a little bit harder to get off. He's having to use a flat blade screwdriver to kind of pry it from the truck. There it is.
Now, what you need to do is you need to remove the two 13-millimeter bolts on the tailgate itself. We'll fast-forward as he removes these two. The clip should just come right off. We'll just fast-forward as he removes the other two bolts and the clip on this side.
Here are, obviously, the new hinges on the bottom and the old hinges on the top. The hinges from 1A Auto are going to be an exact replacement, and they're going to bolt-in just like the original and work a whole lot better.
So you can see here, he's just pointing out that they're marked "left" and "right." The left side is going to go on your driver's side, and you're going to want to take the shim off the old hinge there and just put that on to the new one. What he is doing right here is he's just putting some anti-sieze onto those bolts. You just want to put that shim and hinge into place and put the bolts into place. We'll just fast-forward here as he tightens up those 13 millimeter bolts. Now, you want to follow the same process on the other side, just putting the anti-sieze on the bolts, putting the hinge into place and tightening those bolts.
Again, you follow the same process, this time, for the hinges on the actual tailgate itself. You're going to want to put the round, the full-circle end on to the driver's side of the tailgate and the half one on the opposite side. We'll just fast-forward through this process.
Now, you're going to want the second person again, and you're going to put the driver's side end on first and angle the other side up and on to the hinge, and then connect those cables on either side of the truck. As you can see, everything looks a lot better now.

It's a good idea to take it out. The next thing you'd wanna do is grab onto these, give them a little squeeze, and take down your tailgate.
The next thing we wanna do is put a nice piece of wood with something soft to protect your tailgate, something that's gonna take a little bit of slack off of this. Now, I'm gonna grab onto this, pull it away, lift up, leave this hanging. Now, we're gonna remove our mounting bolts for the latch. Go ahead and grab this assembly. It's gonna have the rod coming with it. You can either disconnect it now and leave the rod in there or just pull the whole thing out. I'm gonna disconnect it as it is now, and I'll leave the rod right where it is. And there's the latch. It's a great idea to make sure you've got the right part. If it looks as though maybe your parts are opposite from what you're trying to replace, more than likely you have the wrong side of the vehicle. With that said, once you know you have the right one, let's go ahead and continue with the install. Just gonna take this. It's gonna line up pretty much just like that. So, go ahead and grab your rod, slide it up and through the hole just like that. And then make sure you take this little twist, lock it in. Make sure the rod can not slip out of there. It's very important.
Now, when you're putting in your latch, you wanna make sure you grab that rod and put it right up into this area. If you don't and it's sitting down under here, you're gonna have to go ahead and take that latch right back out of there and make sure you fix it. So, just do it now. Put it right up there and then go ahead and bolt in your latch. Now, we're just gonna take this, line it up with where it needs to go. It came with a nice new set of bolts, so we're gonna make sure we use those. You're gonna notice that there are two different bolts, though. The one that has the little shanked area is gonna go down here and it's gonna be the one that has the cable attached to it. Let's go ahead and snug these up. It's important to make sure after you've tightened that, this can still spin. That's what the shanked area on the bolt is for. So, now let's lift up on the tailgate just a teeny bit, line this up, lock it in. Now, if you're gonna be doing the other side, now is a perfect time to do that as well. Let's leave our three bolts right here where we can reach them. Now, we're gonna close the tailgate. Let's go ahead and get this handle in here. Weasel it in. There we are. Now, you're gonna grab your connecting rods here, slide it in, and then lock it down. Slide it in, bring this around, lock it in, give it a nice shake. Do the same to the other side.
So, now with this nice and loose, we can continue on to installing this. If you were to pay attention on the backside, you're gonna see that you have a couple little pitons. And then right here, you have some hookey-dos. When you go to install this, you're gonna put the bottom in first so that the pitons go down into here. Okay, to start this job, let's just compare it, make sure we're dealing with the correct part. This looks great. The next thing we're gonna wanna do is remove our tail lamp. To do that, use a Phillips head screwdriver and remove both those mounting bolts. Grab the lens. Carefully pull it away. Grab some penetrant. Go ahead and spray this down.
Let's use our 15-millimeter wrench right back here to hold this nut and our T40 Torx bit to take this off. There we go. Go ahead and grab that. Slide it in. Take your nut. We're gonna go ahead and put this together but we're gonna leave it nice and loose. The reason for that is because I want it to be able to move around. The next thing we're gonna wanna do is close the tailgate. When the latch comes up, it's gonna bring this to exactly where it lines up perfectly, and then we'll just go ahead and try to snug this at that point so we know exactly where it needs to go. Close this. All right. So, that's latched in. That seems like its exactly where it needs to be. And snug this. Go ahead and snug it up.
Put our tail lamp back in here. Lined up. Start and bolt the screws. After you've done that, go ahead and snug them right up. Okay, let's test it. Perfect.
