What are Tapered Bearings and Why Use Them?  Tapered bearings use rollers shaped like flat-topped cones and two races angled from the outside in of the bearing.  This angle makes the bearing better at handling forces exerted on the bearing during cornering (known as axial load) in trucks and large cars.  Your model came from the factory with tapered bearings. Roller ball bearings work well for smaller cars, but replacing a tapered bearing with a roller ball bearing increases wear and failure.

How to Replace Wheel Bearing Hub Assembly 02-08 Dodge Ram 1500 Truck

Learn how to replace your own wheel hubs on your 02-08 Dodge Ram. In this video, the expert mechanics at 1A Auto will show you how to replace a hub that's vibrating, groaning or loose.

  1. step 1 : Remove the wheel and tire
    • Raise and secure the vehicle.
    • Remove the lug nuts and then the wheel.
  2. step 2 : Remove Caliper
    • Turn wheels all the way in the opposite direction of the side you are working on.
    • Use your socket wrench to remove the caliper bolts.
    • Use a wire tie to help prevent stress on the caliper.
    • Use your socket to remove the brackets.
  3. step 3 : Remove brake disk
    • Take care not to touch the rotor, and if you do make sure to clean it with rubbing alcohol or mineral spirits.
  4. step 4 : Remove Hub
    • Use a 35mm socket to remove the hub nut.
    • Give the axle a slight tap with a hammer to loosen it.
    • Use a pry bar to remove the axle.
    • Remove the 3 bolts securing the hub using your 18mm socket and extension and ratchet or breaker bar.
    • You can use penetrating oil to help.
    • Disconnect your ABS sensor.
    • Use a rubber mallet to break your hub free, and work around the flange with the hammer to pull it off.
    • Remove the hub and shield.
    • Clean up any corrosion with a wire brush.
  5. step 5 : Install new hub
    • Use some penetrating oil to prep the knuckle for the new hub.
    • Put the three 18 mm bolts in place and tighten the nuts to 100 ft lbs.
    • Reinstall the ABS harness.
    • Replace the axle.
    • Tighten but don't torque the lug nut.
  6. step 6 : Put brakes and wheel back on
    • Remember to replace the lug nuts on in a star pattern.
    • Lug nuts tighten to 120 ft lbs
    • Hub nut is 185 ft lbs.
    • Make sure to check your brakes and steering before driving again.
    • Make sure to pump the brakes and seat your rotors.

These wheel bearing & hub assemblies (pair) fit great and are working as advertised. I wish install was a easy as the 1AAuto video! Hub nut on the passenger side was a bear. Also, axles in my 2006 1500 4WD didn't cooperate, so I just popped the upper ball joints. Check yours before you order and replace them while you are into the project if they are worn. Great product, fast shipping - and fair shipping charges to Hawaii.

One of my front hub bearings went out so I bought these to replace them. They matched up perfectly and installed easily enough. The hardest part was removing the old rusted ones that had been there for 10 years. These seemed well built but only time will tell how they hold up.

Shipping was timely, and my 2 hubs arrived in good shape, as ordered. Everything appeared to be in order, including the antilock brake sensor. There were no complications caused by mismatched parts. They bolted on perfectly, except for a slight unevenness in the surface of the triangular bolt flanges that appeared when I pushed the hub into position without the backing plate installed. The bolt flange on one hub wobbled slightly rather than seating solid (before bolting). However, after installing the backing plate and bolts torqued to specs, I could no longer recognize any imperfection. Although I have since driven the truck maybe only 1,000 miles, I feel confident that I will not see any problems due to quality issues. I would buy these same parts again. Saved a bunch of cash! :)

I suspected that the front wheel bearings on my 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 were failing, especially on the passenger side, The truck sounded as if I had aggressive knobby tires on the front. The new TRQ bearings install took a little effort but thanks to penetrating oil, anything is possible. The quality of the new bearings seem good and I believe I'll get good service from these components.

i was scared to do the repair myself and watched the 1a auto and other videos many times before attempting along with replacing brake pads and rotors, i had bad hubs and was tired of hearing the road noise. getting the hub assembly loose was the biggest hassle...6 hours later after replacing both driver and passenger hubs i and very happy with the difference the new hubs made, i will soon be looking to get rear rotors and brake pads and do that repair as well with parts from 1a auto.

I ordered this kit because it contains both hubs. My driver side bearing were making lots of noise, so figured I might as well change both since the truck has 103,000+ miles. The hubs were received in good condition and were well packed. The driver side hub has the correct speed sense wire for trucks with only rear wheel drive ABS. I replaced the driver side yesterday with no problems. These are a perfect fit. Thankfully my good friend has a lift which made the job much easier. It took us 2 hours to do the replacement on the driver side and that was having to back up a couple of times to make sure we were doing things correctly. I anticipate being able to do the passenger side in an hour or so. Highly recommend this kit if you are having hub/bearing issues with your RAM 1500. The videos are most helpful as well. 1A is my go to source for parts for this truck.

I purchased this set to replace both front hubs, even though only the driver's side needed replacement. The quality is great, the price is right, and the videos help out immensely. Do make sure to have the right tools, including deep 6-pt sockets, breaker bar, torque wrenches, and a nice weighted hammer.

Yes, it really is a pair for a great price. I installed mine and had a bearing noise almost immediately. The UPS was rough on my shipment. The box was all messed up. However, I gave 1A a call and they replaced the bad bearing at no cost to me. Highly recommend 1A.
