Hi, I'm Don from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video we're going to show you how to replace the rear struts on this 2003 Nissan Altima. The items you'll need for this are new rear struts from 1A Auto.com, 12 millimeter and 18 millimeter sockets and a ratchet with an extension, 14 millimeter wrench, a vise, a pair of vise grips, pry bar, and a hammer.
Start off by just spraying these bolts up here with some penetrating oil and we'll fast forward as Don removes these two 12 millimeter bolts. Now, underneath the car, on the lower part of the strut, right here, you can see that it's held in with an 18 millimeter bolt. We're just going to fast forward as Don removes this and you can see he uses a piece of pipe for leverage. It just makes it easier to remove that bolt. Once the bolt's out you just want to pry the strut up and off. Then you want to just pull the strut down and out and watch out. The little rubber cap at the top will fall down.
Now, to remove the outside of the strut and put it onto the new one you just want to put this into a vise. Use vise grips to hold the end of it and then, using a 14 millimeter wrench, just loosen up the nut at the top there. Once the nut's removed you can pull the outer part of the strut off and you can see the old one in the back, the new one from 1A Auto up front. They're identical and they'll mount exactly the same.
Now, slide the outer part of the strut onto the new strut and we'll fast forward as Don puts it back in the vise. Same as before, just reverse the order and tighten that back up.
Now, feed your strut back up into the wheel well with the rubber cap on top of it. Now line up the top into the hole and line up the holes on the strut with the studs and then just replace those two 12 millimeter nuts. Now, using a pry bar and a hammer you just want to carefully push that strut back into place. Then, replace that 18 millimeter bolt. Then, you're all set with this side and you want to repeat the process on the other side.
