GMC Sierra Hybrid
GMC produced a hybrid gasoline-electric pickup truck from 2005 to 2007 and again from 2009 to 2013. Other than the exterior styling, the Sierra Hybrid was almost identical to its sibling the Chevy Silverado Hybrid.
The first generation used the electric motor mostly as a more robust version of a starter motor. Allowing the engine to turn off when the truck was stopped and then turn back on when the driver pressed the accelerator improved the truck’s city mileage per gallon to 21, matching its highway mpg. The gas engine could also be used to run the electric motor as a generator, which provided power to several outlets in the truck’s bed and back seat. This generation of the Sierra Hybrid was built from 2005 to 2007.
GMC introduced a new truck platform in 2007, but it wouldn’t introduce the new hybrid version until 2009. The new Sierra Hybrid could run solely on electric power at low speeds, or could use the gas and electric motors for a combined 349 horsepower. It came decked out with standard features like climate control, Bluetooth, and satellite radio. A Navigation system, rearview cameras and a Bose sound system were optional. This generation of Sierra Hybrids lasted until 2013.
