Monroe Shocks and Struts
Monroe is known today for its shocks and struts, but when the company was founded in 1918, cars used carriage springs. Roads also weren’t as well maintained as they are today, leading to frequent flat tires. So, August Meyer and Charles McIntyre formed the Monroe Automobile Equipment Manufacturing Company in Monroe, Michigan to produce tire pumps. Soon, they were selling over two million tire pumps a year.
The tire pump business was about to go belly up, though. Service stations began supplying free air and more cars were coming equipped with spare tires. Monroe engineers were able to develop the tire pump technology into what they called “shock eliminators.” They made their first ones in 1926, and introduced a hydraulic version in 1929. 1933 Hudsons using Monroe shocks were the first automobiles to use hydraulic shock absorbers. In 1938, Monroe produced the first shock absorbers to be used on railway cars.
By the 1950’s, Monroe’s Monro-Matic shocks were the shocks most used by American carmakers. In the 1980’s, Monroe began manufacturing struts. Through the 1990’s and 2000’s, Monroe continued to innovate and develop new product lines, including Sensa-Trac shocks and struts, which adjust to changing road and weight conditions; Quick-Strut strut and spring assemblies, which come complete and ready to install, making them quick, safe, and easy to use; and Econo-Matic struts, a more economical version of the ready-to-install strut and spring assembly.
Considering Monroe’s attentiveness to product development and improvement, it should come as no surprise that the company won the Automotive Technician’s Choice award for Best Aftermarket Shocks and Struts Brand in both 2007 and 2008. They also demonstrated their presence as a premier shock and strut brand by being featured on the Discovery Channel show How It’s Made.
