The Chrysler Corportation was founded in 1925 by Walter Chrysler. In the early 20?s Chrysler came to the doorsteps of the failing Maxwell-Chalmers motor company. On June 6th, 1925 Maxwell-Chalmers voluntarily transferred its properties to Chrysler, a chairman of the company, who promptly renamed the company Chrysler Corporation. The first Chryslers were re-badged and retuned Maxwell vehicles. In 1928 Chrysler introduced the Plymouth brand as an entry level vehicle line and the DeSoto as a medium priced vehicle line. Chrysler also acquired the Dodge Company and eventually introduced the high priced Imperial car line. The purpose of this was to compete with GM?s five car lineup, offering customers vehicles with different levels of luxury. During the 30?, the ?Mopar? (motor parts) division of Chrysler was created; most Chrysler products are still referred to as Mopars today. Chrysler is responsible for the Plymouth Barracuda, the first pony car, which beat the Ford Mustang to the market by two weeks. In 1998 Daimler-Benz acquired Chrysler forming DaimlerChrysler Motors Company. In 2007 Daimler announced it would sell 80.1% of the Chrysler Group, due to poor sales and company restructuring. However, Chrysler products live on, as Jeep, Dodge, and Chrysler vehicles are still in production.
