Andy points out the most common problems with the engine, and offers you tips on what you can do to prevent them or fix them if they have already happened to you!
Here we have a 2005 to 2007 Volkswagen Jetta. In this video, we're going over the top engine problems for this vehicle. First thing, we're gonna talk about, and probably the worst problem, is the timing chains. When you take the engine cover off, the timing chain is actually located on the backside of the engine or the driver side of the engine as opposed to the front of the engine. One of the difficult parts about it is you're not gonna have much warning when the timing chain is starting to fail. If you start hearing timing chain noises or some rattling-type noises from the backside of the engine, or you get a check engine light, it's time to replace it right away. If you have a vehicle with high mileage and you haven't replaced the timing chains yet, it's a good idea to replace them before it's too late, before it causes more engine damage. It is an extremely large job to do, there's a lot of parts that need to be removed, and you're gonna need special tools.
While we're in this area, let's talk about the valve cover. Now, the conditions you're gonna have with the valve cover being bad could be the gasket leaking oil into where the coils are. If oil gets in there, you're gonna end up with a misfire. Also related to the valve cover is the PCV system that's attached right here. And when that fails, you're gonna end up with a vacuum leak which can also cause a misfire. If you end up with just the oil leaking into where the coil packs are, you could get away with just replacing the gasket, otherwise you're gonna have to replace the whole cover.
Oil leaks, not only with the valve cover leaking oil but also the oil pan gasket leaking. In this area, you may see a lot of oil and the transmission pan gasket as well. The only thing you can really do is take the oil pan down, clean up the gasket, and reseal it, put the oil pan back up. If the oil pan is extremely rusted, you probably wanna replace the pan as well.
And the last problem is the oil pump which is actually underneath the oil pan. So while you're under the oil pan if you took it down to reseal it, check the oil pump screen and see if it's plugged up, clean that out real good. The symptom you're gonna notice with the bad oil pump or a screen being clogged up is the low oil pressure light on. You don't wanna neglect this, you wanna change it, or clean the screen as soon as possible. And to prevent this from happening more, change your oil more often.
There's our top engine problems for this Volkswagen Jetta. Overall, not too bad, a couple of tricky ones, but most you can do at your home.
