Top Check Engine Trouble Codes 2002-08 Dodge Ram 1500 Truck

Created on: 2021-05-03

Sue explains two of the common check engine codes that pop up for the 2002 to 2008 year range of the Dodge Ram

In this video, we're gonna talk about trouble codes that we found on an '02 to '08 RAM 1500. So the first code I wanna talk about is P0440, and it is an EVAP code, and it is the canister purge control solenoid, that's a lot to say, and it's located right up here in the driver's fender. It is a round plastic, looks like a filter but it actually isn't, there's an actual rubber diaphragm in there that open and closes a valve. For the vent side here, take in invent, then there's the solenoid connector. Now, if you get a code P0440, the first thing you should do is check for a proper ground, and by doing that you would push this red safety lock-in, pull down on the tab, disconnect it. You're gonna grab your test light, and you're going to reverse your test light. You're gonna put the alligator clip on the positive side, test it, make sure it lights up when you hit the negative. Turn your key in the on position, come down here and check your black wire, that's the solid black wire, and it is on the right side if you're looking at it this way. Put your test light connector there, and if it lights up, you have a good ground. That's what you're looking for there. If you have a good ground, more than likely the solenoid is no good, you can take this dove [sp] out and test it with a meter but it's a lot going into it, there's a lot of these replaced. So I would just make sure your ground is good, just replace the valve.

The other code I wanna talk to you about is P0456, an EVAP code, and it has to do with the ESIM, that is Evaporated System Integrity Monitoring. I understand, it's a long word. And it is back here, it is a charcoal canister. This whole bugger right here, it's loaded with charcoal, filters the actual emissions coming out of the gas tank and it vents right up to the solenoid in the front, the vent solenoid. And what happens is, this gets of age, it gets clogged eventually but also dirt gets in there and causes some havoc. So the proper way to test this is to use a smoke machine now. Not everybody has a smoke machine, they don't come cheap. So, what I would suggest is go by the mileage of the vehicle. If you have almost 200k on it and you haven't changed that yet, more than likely it should be changed. And it's not cheap. So, check your power source, unplug your connector here, and check for a good ground like I showed you in the other code. If you've got a good ground, I would say get the canister, comes with that solenoid, replace it, and just do a visual check and make sure you have no other broken lines.
