Andy points out the most common problems with the Jeep Cherokee, and offers tips and suggestions on how you can fix those problems
In this video, we're going over the top five problems on this 2nd generation Jeep Cherokee.
Number one, the throttle position sensor. Now, it's located right here on the throttle body, on the backside. And some of the symptoms you're gonna notice is a rough running engine, hesitation while accelerating, and, sometimes, hard starting. To replace it, you could replace the entire throttle body or just replace the sensor itself.
Number two, oil leaks. Now some of the common oil leaks are the valve cover gasket, which is right underneath the valve cover, right here. You'll notice some of the oil seeping near the corners. And in that event, you're gonna have to replace the gasket itself. Pull the valve cover off, remove the old one, put a new gasket on, and you should be good to go. Another common oil leak is the oil pan gasket. And pretty much the same as the valve cover gasket, you need to remove the pan, replace the gasket.
Number three, the transmission range selector switch. It's located on this side of the transmission, and the wiring harness goes up and over. And some of the symptoms you may find is no reverse lights, or you may end up with a code P0705. The only real fix for this is to replace the switch itself. The switch is located on this side, the passenger's side, of the transmission, which is not normal. Most vehicles have it where the actual shift lever is. If you look on the driver's side, the shift lever is over here.
Number four, the exhaust manifold. You may notice while you're driving down the road, especially when you accelerate, you may hear a ticking type noise. And a lot of times, that's because the exhaust manifold has cracked. Most of the time, it cracks where it's welded together. If you have this problem, the only way to fix it is to replace the exhaust manifold. You can see part of the exhaust manifold right here, and most of it you can see underneath the intake.
Number five, the ignition wires. If you notice that the engine is running extremely rough, sometimes you may even have a flashing check engine light. Now the older versions of this vehicle have a distributor with wires coming off the distributor, and a lot of times, they fail. In that event, you're gonna have to replace the wires. It's always a good idea to replace the plug, and the cap and rotor as well.
On this vehicle, we have coils that go right over the plugs, and you have wire boots instead. Sometimes those wire boots get deteriorated, and they gotta be replaced. And, again, it's always a good idea to replace the plugs as well.
So, there's our top five problems for this Jeep Cherokee. Overall, these are great vehicles. I actually used to own one. If you enjoyed this video, please subscribe to our channel, ring the bell, turn on all notifications, so you don't miss any of our videos.
