How to Replace Tail Light Bulbs 1988-98 GMC Sierra

How to install, repair, fix, change or replace a broken, damaged, burned out, tail light / brake light bulbs on 96 GMC Sierra

step 1 :Remove the Tail Light
- Remove the two Phillips head screws from the tail light bracket
- Pull the tail light out
- Disconnect the tail light wiring harness
- Remove the 1/4" bolt and the Phillips head screw from the bulb panel

step 2 :Replace the Tail Light Bulbs
- This step is only necessary if you are replacing the tail light bulbs
- Turn the base of the bulbs counterclockwise
- Remove the old bulbs
- Disconnect the wiring harnesses from the old bulbs
- Connect the new bulb to the wiring harness
- Insert the new bulbs
- Turn the base of the new bulbs clockwise

step 3 :Install the New Tail Light
- Tighten the 1/4" bolt and the Phillips head screw to the bulb panel
- Reconnect the wiring harness to the tail light
- Line up the holes on the tail light bracket to the bolt holes on the vehicle
- Replace the Phillips screws into the tail light bracket

In this video we're going to be working with our 1996 GMC Sierra K1500. We're going to show you how to remove the tail light assembly, so you can get in there and change out the reverse brake and turn signal bulbs.

Here are the items you'll need for this repair: Phillips screwdriver, ¼" socket, ratchet, and socket extensions.
Open your tailgate, and remove the two Phillips head screws here. I know that one is a little hard to find, but it is don't there and there's a little divot that it sits inside of. Just remove them with the Phillips screwdriver. Pull the headlight out and forward to release the tabs in the back. Lift up and release this electrical connector from the back of the housing.
Remove the quarter-inch bulb here and the Phillips head screw on the other end to remove the bulb panel from the inside of the tail light. Once the screws are out, you can remove the bulb tray. Any of these bulbs can be removed simply by pulling them out of the socket, popping a new one in.
You can see that's the same for the other two, and you need to change one of them. Remove the gasket from the bulb tray here and lay it back on to the back of the tail light housing.
Then reinstall the bulb tray, the Phillips head screw on the bottom, and a quarter-inch screw on the top.
Reconnect the electrical connector at the bottom of the bulb tray and hook these tabs back into their slots. The tail light's back into the truck. We'll reinstall our two Phillips head screws.
