Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.

In this video, we're going to show you how to remove and reinstall the front door handle on this 2006 Chevy Malibu. It's the same as any '04 to '08 Malibu, and some other GM vehicles as well. Obviously, in this one, we're going to show you the driver's side, but the passenger's side is the same procedure. The tools you'll need are a flat blade screwdriver, T25 Torx driver, door panel clip tool or a putty knife, a hammer and punch, a high speed drill with a 1/4 inch drill bit, and either a stubby sheet metal bolt or a rivet and rivet gun to refasten the door handle.

First, you're going to remove the little panel right here. Then, in behind, there are two T25 Torx screws. We'll just speed it up as we remove those two screws. Next, you'll want to remove your plate around your door handle, and pry down and out here. Up in this corner, I'm working my fingers in behind here, and then pushing my door handle up, up here, and then up, right here. You can see it, there's a little tab here, here, here, and here. Then you press on a little tab right here to disconnect your lock switch. Then your power window switch, you're going to carefully go right up underneath the front here and pull up on that. Push in there and try and pry on the switch a little this way, and pull it up to the front.

Then on these switches, there's a tab in behind here, release that. There's a tab here, just squeeze and release. Then, on your mirror, there's a tab right there. Usually it's easier to just push it with a screwdriver and pull it. On the back of the door, there's a little fastener. There are actually two of them, and I'm missing one on this car. You just push the center right in through, and then you can pry them out. Now, along the perimeter there's a series of pins. A door panel clip tool is the right tool, but you can also use a household putty knife. You basically put in and pry out on the panel. You work your way around and pop your pins free. What just fell out was a little clip that actually goes on your power window switch. Push it back in like that.

Now you're going to come up here to this triangle speaker. Pry out at the top and pull up and out. Now your door panel should come up. You still have to reach down in now and disconnect your trunk lock. You want to carefully pull away your water shield and insulation to expose the inner door.

You'll need to use a punch and a hammer and knock out the middle of this rivet right here that holds the door handle. As I'm unsuccessful at getting the center of that rivet out, so what I'm going to have to use is a blunt nosed 1/4 inch drill bit and drill that out carefully. Here I'm using the high speed drill. Drill out the center of that rivet, and then you'll see me use a screwdriver. Once I drill a certain way you can start to see the rivet coming apart. Then use a screwdriver to pry in behind the handle first, and then pry on the rivet itself. Break it so you can take it apart.

Once you get the rivet loosened up, then you can slide the handle forward. You can undo this clip here, pull the rod out, and then in behind, you can see that your rod is just bent, so just take the handle and move it like that. Then your handle is off.

You're also going to want to use your hammer and punch. I'm just trying to snap this a little from the top and bottom. Loosen it up and push it through. To reinstall the handle, you want to put the rod through the bottom and spin it down so it's right on there like that. Take your handle, make sure it's forward, make sure there's no wires back there, and slide it back into the door and push that in there. If you have a rivet and a rivet gun, that's fine, or you can use a stubby sheet metal bolt to hold it in place. I'm going to use a ratchet. It just needs to be in there firm. It's just going to hold it in place, really.

Now, carefully put your water shield back on. Make sure you feed both harnesses through, and then just use some of the holes in the door's water shield to line it up. Make sure it goes on there well. Now you have to pry out and disconnect it. There's your door panel off.

To reinstall the door panel, it's pretty easy, make sure you plug in your trunk button. Lift this panel up and out of the way, make sure all of your connectors come up through here and lift it up into place. Lift it up and over, and make sure this little lock button comes through here. Let's see, there it is. Lift up and push it on, on the shelf there, and then make sure the pins go in. The little pins in the back, you want to push them back through because they're popped out. Then push them in and then flush to lock.

Now we're on to your two screws. Again, speed it up here as we put in those two T25 Torx screws. This, you look down in and make sure your wire is toward the back. Push it down in and on. This little goes there, and make sure that you plug your power lock back in. Push that back and on, and plug your mirror and your power window harnesses in. Make sure when you're putting this back in you slide the back down in first and then clip the sides and top on.
