Hi, I'm Don from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and the next time you need a part for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the front bumper on this 1996 Chevy Tahoe. It's the same part and similar process on these Tahoes from 1995 to 2000. The items you'll need for this include a new front bumper from 1AAuto.com, a 7mm, 10mm, 11mm, 13mm and 18mm socket and ratchet with a piece of pipe for leverage, a Phillips screwdriver, a pair of pliers, and an 11mm wrench.
If you have tow hooks, you're going to want to remove those, and they're just held in with two 18mm bolts. We'll just fast-forward as Don removes those, and you can see he uses a piece of pipe for some extra leverage because they can be in there pretty good. Next, we have to remove the grill.
Start off by removing these four 10mm bolts. We'll just fast-forward as Don does that. Now, there's another 10mm bolt right here. Just go ahead and remove that. Next, lining your parking light on either side, you'll see four Phillips screws. Just go ahead and remove those. We'll fast-forward as Don does that. Once you pull your parking light, you just want to push in on these tabs and twist the sockets free. Then twist this socket from your side marker light and then repeat the process on the other side.
Then, when you go to remove your grill, just pry up on this tab and pull out on the grill. Do the same thing on the other side. Then, in the center, straight down, you'll see this tab, just push down on it, and the grill will pull free. Next, remove these 10mm bolts that line this panel. Again, we'll fast-forward as Don removes those. Once those are removed, you can lift the panel up and out.
Now, we have to remove this air deflector lining the bottom of your bumper, and it's held in with a series of 10mm bolts. We'll just fast-forward as Don removes each of those. Once those bolts are removed, the deflector will just pull right down. Now, remove these four 18mm bolts. Again, you may need your piece of pipe to help break these free. Now, on the top of the bumper, there's four more 18mm bolts. Just go ahead and remove those. Now, just pull straight out on your bumper and it'll pull free.
Now, to swap over your license plate bracket, you have to remove these four 11mm bolts. You can use an 11mm wrench or an 11mm socket on the back to hold the nuts as you remove the bolts. Next, remove the impact strip, which is held in on either side by four 13mm nuts. Now, using pliers, just push in these tabs, and you just want to do this all the way along the bumper. We'll fast-forward as Don does this.
In the back is the old bumper; up front is the new one from 1A Auto. You can see they're identical, and they're going to fit exactly the same. Now, push in the center clips on your impact strip, and then do one side at a time, just pushing in all of the clips and making sure those studs go through the holes on the sides. Replace those four 13mm nuts and tighten them up. Push a bolt through your license plate bracket, and then push it into place and replace the nut on the other side. Then replace the other nuts and bolts, and just tighten all of them up.
Take your new bumper and just push it back into place. You want to make sure that each of these bolt holes line up. Now, for the bumper bolts, we put just a little bit of lube on the bolts to help them go in this isn't necessary, you don't have to this. You can see Don puts each bolt along the top back into the bumper, and then goes back with a socket and ratchet and tightens them up. Now repeat the same process with the four 18mm bolts along the bottom of the bumper. Then hold your air deflector back up into place and replace the center bolt. We'll fast-forward as Don replaces the other bolts and then tightens them all up.
Now for your tow hooks, there's this bolt inside here that you want the bolts to go up through. Just place your hook through and then push the bolts up through making sure they go up through that block. You want to make sure that you start both bolts before you tighten up either of them, and after you've tightened those up, repeat the process on the other hook. Now put this panel at the top of your bumper back into place, making sure all of your lights are up and over it. Then replace those four 10mm bolts.
Now, you want to line up those tabs with those slots, and make sure that your sockets pull through the grill and then push that tab back into place. Do the same thing on the other side and in the center. Then replace those four 10mm bolts along the top of the grill. Now twist that side marker light socket back into place, and then twist both of those parking light bulbs back into the parking light. Then push the parking light back into place, and replace those four Phillips screws. Once you've done that, repeat the process on the other side and you're all set.
