In this video, we go over, basically, gas cap removal and replacement . that's pretty easy . and also some of the basic functions of the gas cap.
Gas cap replacement: no big secret here. You take it off and you put the new one on, but more what I want to talk about is, why would you want to replace your gas cap. Your gas cap actually regulates the pressure in your system. I'm going to remove this bolt. A lot of the gas caps are held in by a strap here, 10mm bolt on this car. Simply remove the bolt. We'll reinstall this bolt.
Maybe you've gone to the gas station and forgotten to put your cap back on. The check engine light will go on, because your fuel system monitors the pressure in the fuel tank, and your gas cap is actually the valve that keeps that pressure. This is a brand new cap, never had gas on it or anything. What I'm going to do is suck on it a little bit. You hear that little duck call? That's the valve inside. There's rubber and metal springs and stuff inside that as the fuel pump draws fuel out of the tank, it builds up a certain amount of vacuum and then allows air into the system. What will happen, is it'll go bad and your gas cap can actually cause the check engine light to go on. So, a new cap from 1A Auto, goes right on, and tightens up. Let's just make sure we tighten that bolt back up a bit, that had the strap on it. Hopefully if your gas cap has gone bad and is causing your check engine light to come on, that'll fix your problem. We hope this helps you out.
